Assessing the Wind and Weather. When assessing the flagpole to acquire, determine the usual weather occurrences in your residence. Determine if the place has high winds all the time. Also determine the flow of the wind if there other things surround the area such as a hill that serves as an obstruction. If you have these features around, you should try getting a better-quality flagpole instead. Discuss the matter with dealers regarding the wind rating on the pole you intend to acquire. You can also try getting a telescoping flagpole instead that will let you adjust the flag or completely take it down in bad weather.

Check the wind at your residence. You might need a flagpole that has a higher wind rating.

Check if you are surrounded by other houses, trees or hills and if wind will not affect the flag during presentation. The United States Code of Federal Regulations indicates in Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 6.1., that it is traditionally practiced to show the flag only from sunrise to sunset on establishments and on immobile flagstaffs openly. But, when it is chosen to have a patriotic feel, the flag may be presented all day and night if there is enough illumination during the night.

If you wish to present the flag constantly, you need to prepare different types of light. Low-voltage flagpole lights will go for around $100 and include a photo cell.
