Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II actually has a personalized flag for her own use. The flag is a crowned capital E, surrounded by roses, is gold on a blue background. This flag is for occasions when the queen visits Commonwealth countries in lieu of the Royal Standard, as the monarch goes by Elizabeth Windsor when on Commonwealth business. Princess Diana also had her own personal flag at the time of her marriage to Prince Charles, and the recent royal attention to Prince William and future queen Kate Middleton makes us wonder, what will the Duchess of Cambridge’s personal flag be once she is queen?

Prince William was “granted arms” upon reaching his majority, and his current arms are highly similar to his fathers. Traditionally, a woman’s arms are “impaled” on her husbands, but as the rules of British Heraldry are quite boring and uninteresting to your run-of-the-mill royal watcher, fantasizing Kate Middleton’s personal flag demands that that rules be not followed.

What would the personalized flag look like? Would she follow Queen Elizabeth’s personal flag, but substitute it with a K? Tongue in cheek suggestions for the flag would include a high-heeled shoe for her fashion sense, crossed hockey sticks to represent her sporty side, and a tiara to show her entry into the royal world. While heraldic purists are probably hyperventilating in shock, we of pop culture grit simply say, Why not? It’s fabulous!

Kidding aside, the personal flag of Kate Middleton would engender much speculation regarding the elements she would choose, considering that her roots are not in royalty. By and large her royal standard would borrow elements from her husband’s, but her personalized flag would definitely have more personal, and modern elements.

Trade shows have a wide and varied audience, but most often they serve to increase sales and get market share, widen customer base and increase customer lifetime, to introduce new products, and to position an organization or its products. Different display types abound in trade shows, from simple tabletop displays, custom table banners, to all out modular displays.

Exhibits in trade shows vary from “build and burn” types which just last for one duration of the show, or a set-up that can be moved from one trade show to another. In creating the exhibit, the objectives of the display and physical limitations often dictate how the design gets executed. For exhibits that will require travelling and several incarnations of the design, ease of installation and durability are at a premium.

A custom table banner made out of durable material makes for a great base and travels well, with designs that do not fade and remain eye catching all throughout a display run. Modular displays, Panel and Frame Systems, and Pop-up displays are more complicated than your simple table-top displays, but a company banner or custom table banner or throw will still be a great opportunity for branding.

Depending on your exhibition needs, different contractors are available via the trade show organizers or if you choose to source labor yourself, the internet has several trade show supply vendors to select from, including makers of custom table banners. Select the vendor who can work with your company requirements and can deliver the goods on time. Not sure where to go? Get a referral from companies or retailers who have been in the trade show scene for a long time to get their advice.

The phrase twirler flag brings to mind high stepping band majorettes or cheerleaders in skimpy uniforms, waving flags. However in the jargon of advertising, a twirler flag means a totally different thing.

The twirler is a close cousin of the feather flag, whose hoist side is on a longer vertical compared to its fly side, however, twirlers come in several shapes. They can be hook shaped, oval, or teardrop shaped, but its most prominent feature that gives it its name is its ability to rotate on its pole in 360 degree turns. This makes it a very appealing advertising tool, as the movement of the flag becomes eye-catching and gives maximum exposure of the message or design on the flag.

Due to the design of the rotating flag, it has specialized accessories for mounting and display, which are often sold separately wherever the feather flag has been sold. The hardware needed allows the flag to rotate in gusts of wind when displayed outdoors. Other types of twirler flags are mounted on bases that makes the flag rotate via a motor.

Twirler flags also refer to the flags used in parades and field demonstrations. These twirling flags come with specialized hardware for their display, which can include wrist straps and specialized light weight poles. Flag twirling has been part of marching band competitions or part of cheerdance routines. Flags used in twirling are often designed with specific choreography in mind.

Whether it is a twirling flag for advertising or a twirling flag for performances, let your flag maker know which type you would be needing, and any reputable manufacturer should be able to create the twirler flag that you need.

Every year, racing events draw numerous fans and spectators to watch cars go full speed across challenging tracks, with their favorite drivers behind the wheels of the spiffiest cars. Racing sounds simple – the car who crosses the finish line first wins. But is all there is to it? What about pit stops and lap times? What are those racing flags they keep on waving?

For the newbie at racing, the flags on a track are used for signaling to drivers track or race conditions. Most popular of the flags is the checkered black and white, and this means the end of the race. Many a race car driver is eager to be the first person driving past that checkered flag.

If the chessboard looking flag is stop, the green flag signals the start of the race. It is also used in the pits to signal that the pits are open. The yellow flag, much like it stoplight counterpart, signals caution. This race flag requires drivers to slow down, and the use of stationary, waved or 2 waved flags mean different levels of caution for the drivers. The red race flag would mean that the race has been stopped, and is usually waved when conditions are too dangerous to continue.

Other race flags are instruction flags for individual drivers. A black flag with an orange circle means that the car has to return to the pits. A per-bend flag, or a flag divided diagonally across the center to white and black parts, means a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The black flag with a white cross or saltire flag signals to the driver he is no longer being scored. Blue flags with a diagonal red, orange or yellow flag informs the driver that a faster car is approaching, and during races indicates that the driver is about to be lapped.

Those are the more common racing flags that are used in car races, and the IndyCar, Nascar, and FIA races use the flags in different ways.

In ancient Roman times, the first version of the flag was attached to a spear and was displayed in battle. The original flagpole has then morphed into several ways of displaying a flag. Flags are flown from a flagpole or flagstaff, which can be stationary or carried, as in the manner of parades or military displays. At sea, flags are flown from the mast of a ship.

Stationary flagpoles are usually made of wood or metal, with a pulley and cord to raise and lower the flag as needed. Flags have grommets where the cord can be attached. Flagpoles feature a flat plate or a ball at the top, called a truck, which was originally meant to keep the wooden pole from splitting. Finials or decorative pieces can also adorn the ends of a flagpole, such as an eagle or a star or the tip of a spear. Today, the tallest freestanding flagpole is the Dushanbe Flagpole in Tajikistan, at 165 meters or 541 feet. Flagpoles may require supports or guy wires if it is too tall and will need extra support.

Other than the traditional mounted flagpole, more portable ones are available to fly flags and banners on. Most of the flagpoles being marketed today are made out of aluminum or fiberglass, and most often have telescoping lengths for ease and flexibility of use. Flagpoles are also custom made to fit the type of flag in use, and are often sold as accessories wherever flags are ordered. For example, feather flagpoles and golf flagpoles are specialized versions which will fit the specifications.

Custom street banners are a great way to decorate and advertise events and to promote products. Here are some tips on how to make street banners, or light pole banners, work for you.

Choose a design that is catchy to the eye and gets your message across. As the banner is made to be hung from a light pole or displayed in the street, avoid small text or too wordy messages as passing motorists will not be able to receive your message. Employ a design that will work well during the day or night. Use bold colors, but limit the number of colors to a few standard for maximum effect.

When it comes to the printing of your custom street banner, you should decide whether it will be single ply or double. The fabric that you will choose will largely dictate the layers on your banner, as a lighter fabric will result in “see through” and will necessitate another layer. Thicker fabrics would allow for printing to be done on both sides. Take into account as well the weather conditions in which your street banner will hang, and for how long you would intend the display to last when choosing the fabric for printing.

Custom street banners are made to be hung from poles, so make sure that they come with the necessary hardware for installation. Your banner manufacturer should be able to supply you with the necessary supports such as rods and frames needed to hang the banners properly.

When displaying your banners, location is everything. Select areas with lots of foot and vehicle traffic, but at the same time make sure that the banners do not pose a hazard to motorists or pedestrians. You may want to check with your local government offices regarding the display of street banners, if you would need special permits or fees, or if there are any existing regulations for the size and locations allowed for your custom street banners.

Designing a flag for an organization had never been that easy. But do you want to know more tips? Vexillologist, Ted Kaye, who studies flags, will help you out to design your own custom flag. These tips can also be seen in his book entitled Good Flag, Bad Flag.

First off, make your flag as simple as possible. Just like a child who can still draw it from his or her memory. Simplicity can assure you that the symbol can be simply recalled especially if the symbol of the flag you had chosen is for your company or organization.

Next stop; make sure to use significant symbolism. Keep in mind that its better to use certain images and colors that would somehow relate on your company or organization's key values. Even patterns should be relative to it. This process would make your flag sets relevant to what it is representing. Just also use common sets of color and just choose to regulate the colors to at least three, just like the flags being used by countries today like the Pan African colors which include red, green and gold. Also, check out the colors of the Olympic flag, it contains the common set of colors normally being found in almost all flags.

When it comes to the design of the flag, writing is highly discouraged or even the seal of the organization. The explanation of this is that, a seal is at its close range, and the flag is made to be flown. You can actually use other things that could be tied up on your flag design; it could either be a shape or color. Writing can also call off the simplicity you want to achieve. Writing and a seal are difficult to sew and could not be easily be on reversed mode.

Whether your purpose to design a flag is different or somehow is the same with others, just make sure you achieved the uniqueness of the design. Just utilize enough components of similarity to display connections to some other flags if necessary. With these tips being followed, you can actually make a one of a kind design with your custom flag.

It can be called as rag spinning, flag spinning and flagging and the dancers were the flaggers. It is different from flag twirling, which you can see that the flag is connected to a pole. A communication process through visuals signals using rods, bare or gloved hands and flags has been known to be semaphore. It utilizes custom mini flags placed on short poles. This has been used for communication by distance like from this boat to another boat and this was first practiced in the 19th century and was utilized in the navy.

During the modernized flag semaphore, custom mini flags are used with white and blue or known as “Papa” and while sailing at the sea, it usually utilizes red and yellow or “Oscar”. The flag will be held by the other hand with arms extended in usually eight possible directions and will eventually spell out the various letters and numbers by the signalman. Custom mini flags are utilized with different arm positions and the similar outcome can be also achieved by glow rods or paddles and usually being utilized at night.

Japanese people have also created their own method, with the custom mini flag, a solid square in white color in the left and a red solid one at the right. And usually, flag semaphore uses Latin letters, for the Japanese, mini flags are being waved or moved to actually represent brushstrokes of their alphabet or known as the katakana.

And even if the modern technology has provided a wide array of communication ways, flag semaphore had never been in blurry and still in use. This can be used at mountains wherein electronic and even oral communication can be difficult to do. And in other beach resorts, lifeguards usually use custom mini flags to convey message to another life guard towers.

The sight of a flag pole is familiar, as every school, government building and major city square has one, with the flag waving proudly on the breezes blowing. The flag pole or staff displays the flag perfectly, and given how flags are symbols of a nation, it is but natural that the “bigger is better” build has made its way to flagpoles. Here’s a quick tour of the tallest poles in the world.

Most interesting in monster flag pole history is the so-called flagpole war between North and South Korea. The South Korean government put up a pole 98.4 meters tall to fly a 130 kilo flag. The North Korean government retaliated by building a 160 meter pole to fly a flag weighing in at 270 kilos. Both flags are located near the demilitarized zone and can be seen from both borders.

National Flag Square in Bayil, Baku, Azerbaijan boasts an awe inspiring 162 meter tall pole. The flag, which measures 70 meters by 35 meters, suffered damage after installation due to strong winds. This was replaced by another flag, which also got ripped into two due to the prevailing winds. Holding the current record is the Dunshanbe Flagpole in Tajikistan, which tops the Azerbaijan pole by 3 meters. A different record is held by the Ashbagad, Turkmenistan flagpole, which at 133 meters, is the tallest unsupported flagpole in the world, and boasts a flag that is two tennis courts wide.

These gigantic poles support flags that are huge and heavy, but the height pays off. These flagpoles can be seen for miles around.

Is your child having difficulty understanding fractions? You can help them learn fractions easily by having them design their own personalized flags using fractions as a guide. This is quite easy, all you need is some paper and coloring materials, such as crayons or paints.

To prepare the base for the personalized flag, you will need to fold the paper into 24 squares in a six by four pattern, with the longer side having six squares and the shorter side having four squares. Have several of these papers pre-folded so you will have lots of flags to work with in case of mistakes. It is advised to use watercolor or poster paints to make the coloring faster and more enjoyable. Just make sure to cover the area with old newspapers to make sure no messes will happen while making the personalized flags.

Prepare a list of instructions for your kid, and they will come in the format of fraction plus a color, such as “make a flag that is ½ blue and ½ red”. Then your child will use the paint to color the flag, using the squares as a guide. Try to mix colors and fraction sizes to make more personalized flags. Remember to correct your child’s work in case they are not able to color the squares correctly, and use the flag as a means to reinforce the concepts of fractions.

You can add variations to the activity, such as adding dice with colors instead of pips so they can roll a random color to place on the personalized flag. You can also use dice with fractions instead of the pips, and use the opportunity to teach your child how to add fractions. An example would be if he rolls a ½ and a ¾, ask him if this would be correct and use the flag to demonstrate.

Semaphore is a communications system that involves visual signals by the means of the position of flags, rods, paddles or even bare or gloved hands. Flag semaphore uses custom mini flags on short poles. This method of communication is for distance communication, such as from one boat to another. This method of communication started in the 19th century and was most often used in the navy.

In modern flag semaphore the custom mini flags used are the “Papa” or white and blue flag, while at sea it uses the “Oscar”” or red and yellow flags. The signalman holds one flag in each hand, and the arms can extend in eight possible directions, spelling out the different letters of the alphabet and numbers. The custom mini flags used accentuate the arm positions, and the same result can be achieved by paddles or glow rods, commonly used at night.

The Japanese also have developed their own method of flag semaphore, with the custom mini flags are a solid white square for the left and a solid red one for the right. Unlike the flag semaphore using Latin letters, in Japanese semaphore the custom mini flags are moved to represent the brushstrokes of the Japanese alphabet or the katakana.

Though modern technology has given the world diverse forms of communications, flag semaphore still remains in use. Flag semaphore is used also in the mountains, where oral or electronic communication can be hard to come by. Lifeguards in some beaches also use the custom mini flags to communicate between lifeguard towers.

In maritime history, one of the most enduring images is the pirate flag known as the jolly roger, featuring a skull and crossbones. This custom boat flag was utilized by pirates to declare that the ship was being crewed by brigands and would give no quarter when engaged in battle, and most often was flown to scare other ships.

Maritime or boat flags are a language all by itself. As flags are enduring symbols, and the maritime world has etiquette for its flags.   Ensigns are often called to be hoisted upon entry and departure from harbour, when travelling through international waters, and when the vessel is called to do so by a warship. Jacks are other national flags which are being hoisted by warships at the front of the vessel.

They often fly these flags while the vessel is not travelling and when it is decorated during special celebrations. The rank flag, also called the distinguishing flag is the one hoisted by an officer of higher rank on his flagship or territory, thus called a flagship. The pennant, or called a pennon in the olden days, is a long narrow flag which signifies various interpretation bases on its design and usage. Merchant ships usually hoist a flag showing which company holds ownership of the vessel.

Members who have membership to a yacht club or sailing group can fly their club's distinct burgee, a custom boat flag,  both while underway and at anchor (however, not while racing). Historically, when a member of one club goes to another club for the first time, they usually exchange one another’s burgees. The burgees are subsequently shown on the grounds of each club, which can be club office or bar.

Today, boating enthusiasts have created their own custom boat flags, and fly them from their power boats or yachts. As sailing organizations become more popular, the demand for custom boat flags has led custom flag makers to include them in their product lines.

What is the difference between a banner and a flag? Simply put, a banner is a piece of fabric bearing a symbol, logo or other message. A flag is a piece of fabric with a distinctive design that is used as a symbol, as a signaling device, or as a decoration. While a flag has restricted use and etiquette involved in display , banners have more flexibility of use and can be adapted to several applications, such as custom table banners.

Banners are often used in parades, rallies, and its more popular use in advertising, specifically in conventions and trade shows. They are also used for street displays during festivals or storefronts for special events. Flags are used mostly for representation of a nation or organization. It also has a wide use in maritime or naval signals, and in sports due to the wide range of signaling uses.

Banners can contain symbols and logos, such as a custom table banner during a trade show that features the brand being marketed, as well a short advertising blurb. The banner can also be hung instead of draped. Due to the advertising or campaigning nature of the banner, its designs can vary indefinitely, while in contrast, a flag design rarely changes.

In terms of material, flags are made with fabric that will flutter in the wind, as the very nature of a flag is for signaling and recognition. Durable materials are often selected to give flags longevity, while allowing the design to be reversed on the other side. Banners on the other hand, have a wider range of materials used, from the now more popular vinyl background to the traditional cloth banners, which are the ones often used in custom table banners. Banners often have designs printed or painted on them.

Do you need to design a flag for your organization? Here are a few tips from known vexillologist Ted Kaye (a person who studies flags) on becoming your own vexillographer (flag designer) in making your own custom flag. These principles of flag design are outlined in Kaye’s book Good Flag, Bad Flag.

First up in making a custom flag is to keep it simple. Simple defined in this sense would mean that a child can draw it from memory. This way simplicity would ensure recall of the symbol that you have chosen to represent your organization or company.

Next, use meaningful symbolism. Your custom flag should use images and colors that reflect your organizations key values or attributes. Even patterns involved should relate to this symbolism. This ensures that your flag is relevant to what it is trying to represent. Another tip is to use the standard color set and limit the colors to three. Standard set refers to the common colors found in today’s flags, such as the Pan African colors ( red-green-gold) or Pan Slavic colors (red-white-blue). The colors of the Olympic flag contain the standard set of colors found in all flags.

When designing the flag, avoid using lettering or writing or any organization’s seal. A seal is meant to be at close range, a flag is meant to be draped or flown. You may use elements in the seal and tie it back to your flag design, be it a color or a shape. Writing is discouraged as it detracts from simplicity and cannot show up from a distance. These two are also hard to sew on a flag and do not easily reverse.

And finally, depending on the flag’s purpose, be distinctive or be related. You can show uniqueness in the design, but use enough elements of similarity to show connections to other flags if needed. With these tips in mind, you can come up with a great custom flag design for your company or organization.

Before the advent of modern telecommunications, ships at sea relied on visuals to identify themselves and to communicate with other vessels. Custom boat flags were designed to represent the alphabet and numbers for ships to display on their lines. Messages were actually exchanged via these flags.

Nowadays, the alphanumeric flags are still employed, but custom boat flags have come a long way for the boating enthusiast. Yacht clubs and sailing organizations have their own custom flag or burgee that is usually flown by the leisure boat owner. Similarly, a vessel owner might commission their own custom boat flag, usually bearing the name of the boat or yacht.

Boat flags are unique compared to their landline counterparts as they are double sided. Flags being flown on land usually have the design on one side only, with the design “bleeding through” the other side. Boat flags are meant to be flown in changing weather, storms, open seas and skies, and are made of more durable material. The flag would also have to feature durable grommets or similar fastenings to ensure that the flag does not get blown away in a storm or inclement weather.

For the leisure boater keen on completing a full set of boat flags, a set of alphanumeric flags in the cabin closet makes sense . These would be handy to have in case of a communications breakdown, and make for great decorations during boat parties. To complete decking out the boat in all its glory, the club burgee, a state or country flag and a custom boat flag would complete the set.

When looking for a company to manufacture your custom flags, here are some tips on how to choose the right custom flag maker for your needs.

Online or local? Compare the prices of online flag purveyors and your local businesses who can print flags. Most likely, you will find a wider range of prices and products online. Some local businesses will receive your order but the manufacturing goes to someone else whose business base is not local. Whether online or local, keep in mind that prices will always be cheaper if you go direct to the manufacturer, and not to someone who will simply outsource the job.

Your custom flag maker should be able to discuss specifics of your order. Aside from a willingness to discuss what you need, they should be able to provide a wide variety of options, from dyes and fabrics to dimensions and styles. They should also provide specific instructions on how your design will be submitted, and will require you to send your design in a specific format or file type. Any flag maker worth their weight should give you feedback on the quality of your design file prior to actual printing.

As with all vendors or service providers, customer service and product expertise will be an important decision maker in choosing your custom flag maker. Are they willing to discuss alternative shipment options? Are they willing to expedite orders? Is the person you are talking to know about the flag making process? Are they willing to specialize?

In the end, your decision on choosing the right flag maker will depend on the quality of the goods that you receive, and in the time and manner by which you need them. Best of luck in choosing your custom flag maker.
