A lot of people are becoming concerned about the virtue of patriotism. There are some who say that patriotism should be taught to children in classrooms through programs and other methods. The International Maritime Flag System has existed for over 150 years and is widely used by sailors and boaters to send signals to other ships and inland stations. In 1857, the British Board of Trade published the International Code of Signals to improve the method of maritime communications. The first Code had 18 signal flags, which can forward 17,000 unique messages. In 1932, the Code was enhanced to feature six more languages, namely Spanish, Italian, German, French, Norwegian and Japanese. In 1969, two more languages, Greek and Russian, were added to the list as well as each of the alpha-numeric nautical flags given specific meanings in the International Code of Signals. Aside from improving maritime communication, signal flags at present are featured to improve the look of vessels for festive events. Mariners will connect the flags from one end to the other and display these from the rigging of the ship.
The Colors and What These Mean
Nautical flags are made up of various figures, symbols and hues. These can be used alone or in a set to feature different meanings. The flags will provide 26 square flags for each letter in the alphabet and there are 10 numeral pendants too. The flag colors were specifically chosen because these remain visible at sea. For more than 150 years, the International Maritime Flag System was used by sailors and shipment to send signals between vessels and other structures on the shore. In 1857, the British Board of Trade provided the International Code of Signals to allow maritime communications. The original Code featured 18 signal flags, which allowed sailors to send as many as 17,000 messages. In 1932, the Code was develop to feature six more languages, namely, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Norwegian and Japanese. Aside from allowing messages to be sent more efficiently, signal flags are currently used for various ship-related occasions. Sailors feature the flags from one end to the next and display these in a bow-to-stern manner.
The Colors and Meanings

When you look at the back of a one-dollar bill, you will notice the two sides of the Great Seal. The U.S. Seal is very famous and many people actually know the symbolizations since it was first shown in 1782. Currently, the Great Seal is held in a mahogany cabinet and presented in the Department of State Exhibit Hall in Washington, D.C.
The Great Seal is composed of two sides, namely the obverse side and the reverse side.

Eagle
In the middle of the Great Seal, you will see an American bald eagle with its wings up. The country was made beginning with only 13 states or colonies. After the different states decided to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, America became a single unified nation.
The head of the bald eagle stands for the President and the Executive branch of government. The nine feathers of the eagle represents the judicial branch of government, with each tail feather standing for each judge in the Supreme Court. The eagle is also holding an olive branch in its left talon, which means peace and order. The eagle holds 13 arrows in its right talon, which symbolizes defense. This means that America will protect its citizens from all danger.

Americans will always remember April 14, 1865 as a sad day. It was the date when President Abraham Lincoln was killed at Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC.
The “Lincoln Flag” was borne unexpectedly, although at the time, it was considered just like any other ordinary national flag. The flag used to have only 36 white stars since there were fewer states then. The banner was placed as a front bunting on the State Box where the president and his wife were seated on the night of the show.
The assassin John Wilkes Booth pulled the trigger and fired a .44 caliber ball point blank from his derringer straight into the back of the head of President Lincoln’s head. Immediately, the flag was taken out of its position on the front of the State Box to serve as a pillow for the president’s head as he laid down and died.
This is when the “Lincoln Flag” became such a special banner in the course of American history. The flag would move on to stand for the “National Sadness” that the entire country felt as a continuation of the depression brought by four years of Civil War. Thomas Gourley was the person who made the flag into a pillow for the president that night and he and his family would be tasked to care for the special banner in the years to come.

During the 18th century, a pirate named Christopher Moody explored the coast of South Caroline. Although there were a lot of information about him, he was eventually caught and hanged. His pirate flag, however, continues to be seen every now and then in old photos and books. It featured the gold and red tones. From left to right, the flag had a gold hourglass and black wings. It meant that the enemy’s time was over. There was also a white arm and hand holding a dagger. There was a traditional skull over the crossbones. The flag also had a red background that stood for blood. Moody and his crew had lethal plans.
There used to be a French pirate known as Emanuel Wynn. Many believed that he was the first pirate to showcase the Jolly Roger banner. However, there was no real proof. The flag featured a skull over crossbones and there was an hourglass beneath it.
