In Norway, people prepare the Yule Log, which is a long wood that is set onto the fire to keep the whole house warm. The log will burn throughout Christmas Eve, with a portion still laid beyond the fireplace. People will further push the wood into the fire as it continues to burn, thereby keeping the flame burning for several hours. It is very effective in keeping warm during the cold winter months in Norway.
Many business owners close their stores on Christmas Eve to celebrate the season with family and friends. They will dress up and put grain outside their windows and doors for the birds. The church bells also ring throughout Norway just before dinner, which is actually an invitation for people to go to church. Afterwards, families have dinner together. The meal is very festive, with different dishes prepared like sausage, lamb, cod, halibut and pork ribs, depending on which side of the country you are located. Many people also practice the tradition of cooking Christmas porridge. The children should finish their meal and leave a bowl for Santa Claus, called Julenisse in Norway. Norwegians like to cook during Christmas. They will have various meat dishes and baked treats like cakes, gingersnaps, cookies and roast pork. There will also be other items like mashed rutabaga, potatoes, Saint Lucia buns, pickled herring, red cabbage and vegetables. People like to have homebrewed beer, known as Juleol. Women may bake Julekake, or Christmas cake, which is filled with nuts and cherries. A marzipan cake may also be featured, complete with Norway flags.

Fidel Castro became Cuba’s head of state in the 1960s and it was during this time that he prevented people from practicing religion and deemed the country atheist. Cuba was also disallowed from celebrating anything related to religion like holding mass, celebrating Christmas and Lent and featuring church decorations. There were a number of exceptions, however, where Castro allowed people to display decorations in the country for business purposes. Restaurants and hotels were allowed to feature decorations for foreign tourists, who were not prohibited from enjoying Christmas even while away from home. Catholics were still hopeful that someday, Castro would lift the ban.
Several decades later, Castro was more forgiving when it came to holiday celebrations especially after Pope John Paul visited Cuba in 1998. Castro allowed Christians to enjoy Christmas and other religious holidays after he met with the Pope.

In the 1960s, Fidel Castro became the head of Cuba. He declared that Cuba does not practice any religion. He also took out religious holidays from the local calendars and prohibited any religious practice in the country. Christmas, Lent and other religious occasions were banned from being celebrated. However, there were a number of venues where Castro still let people showcase decors during religious occasions, such as hotels and tourist spots. Some business owners were allowed to put up Christmas decorations to lure in foreign customers. In other places in Cuba, however, Christmas was almost nonexistent. The Catholic Church continued to plead with the government to let them celebrate religious days in public.
In 1997, Castro finally decided to be more lenient in terms of religious holiday celebrations. When Pope John Paul visited the country in 1998, Castro took away the ban on celebrating religious occasions to honor the Pope.
Afterwards, Christmas returned in Cuba and people were once again allowed to have fun during the religious holiday. They can attend mass in church and cook a special dinner for loved ones.
