The Confederate flag has been part of so many political debates and it has earned another title, the Rebel Flag. It is in such debates that the issue of what the Rebel flag stands for in American history is often brought up. The most significant of these political debates by far was the in 2000 which tackles the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state house. This subject is nothing new as in the 1990s and 2000s, several lawmakers have proposed changing the state flags that still bear the Confederate symbol, Mississippi and Georgia the two most contested. The symbol, as some would see it, is a symbol of bigotry as the region partially seceded due to keeping slaves. To others, it is a symbol of Southern pride and therefore should be flown to honor those Confederate soldiers who laid their lives in the fight for independence during the Civil War.
The Confederate state flag have been on display on the South Carolina state house since 1962.It has been documented as being flown then for the commemoration of the Civil War centennial although its use for 38 years have been seen by some as a symbol of the resistance of the South to integration. In 1994, the GOP voted to keep the flag but this was overturned as six years later a protest of some 50,000 strong demonstrated on Martin Luther King Jr day in front of the state house to have the flag removed. The Confederate flag was officially taken down on July 2000 after opposition from the NAACP.
