During ancient times, the Spanish people celebrate the coming of winter through a custom called Hogueras. The tradition has been done in Spain many years ago, even before the Spanish flag and Christmas was acknowledged in the country. The Spaniards like to celebrate the Winter Solstice by doing a fire leap, similar to the Saturnalia and Yuletide celebration in various parts of Europe. The practice is believed to keep people healthy in the coming year. Hogueras is also celebrated with other pagan practices throughout the year since Christianity became more popular during the 1500s.

In Spain, there is a very old practice related to the Catholic Church. People pay tribute to the Virgin Mary during the holiday season. Many actually begin the Christmas season during the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. Many Roman Catholic families have their own take of the Virgin Mother and they light up her image for several days during the Christmas period.

During Christmas Eve, many families in Spain gather and exchange gifts. They are also a very religious breed so they generally go to Christmas Eve mass before feasting at home. After their meal, they will gather around their homemade nativity scene and talk about the history of Christmas. The scene will feature a bull most times. Other setups also have women doing laundry. The nativity scene is very popular in Spain especially during Christmas time. People give it great significance and make it a family activity to share the spirit of the season.
