Custom Flag Maker - Custom Flag Manufacturer

My mom's caregiver is a feisty lady from the Philippines, who deliberately traveled the globe in search of green pastures. She had been to Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Middle East doing different types of jobs, but mostly as a domestic helper. But the most memorable has been her stint in the Middle East which almost cost her, her life.

When she went to the Middle East, it was through a recruitment agency and there was really no guarantee that one will be treated fairly. And because she landed on a job where she was abused physically and verbally, she thought of a way out. The only problem facing her is that her passport was in the care of his employer and there is no way she can retrieve it.

She was literally caged in the third floor apartment of his employer, and the only way to freedom was jumping through the window and hopes that she survives the fall. That was the idea, and she did it on the 40th day of the Ramadan period, as everybody was busy celebrating the end of the fast. Upon landing at the pavement with bruises and a slight limp, she roamed the streets and entered a religious sanctuary.

Since the police was after her, she was spirited to the Philippine Embassy two weeks later. She recounts that what made her cry the most was seeing the Philippine Flag hoisted on the Embassy ground, for it simply means freedom from her ordeal. It took another two months before she can be repatriated back.

Once back home, she took a short course as a caregiver and luckily she was hired to work for my mom here in New York.

Have you seen a bird's nest, not the popular soup, but one used by the birds? I'm sure you do and from the physical aspect, it consists of hundreds of trestles delicately woven to form one single nest. And imagine the work it entails to finish one nest.

It is this same principle that the Architects Herzog and de Meuron devised to design the Bird's Nest National Stadium, the venue for the Olympic games in Beijing, China. Instead of regular dried plants and twigs, the designers used tons of structural steel for the trestles that will support the structure. And because steel is vulnerable to rust caused by the indefinite exposure to the weather, it must therefore be protected.

This is where BayerMaterialScience comes in for they have the technology and material appropriate for the protection of the structure. All exposed steel members, including flagpoles, flagpole accessories and stands that will fly the Chinese National Flag and the Olympic Flag will have to be treated to resist the natural elements.

I envy my buddy from Wisconsin, because he and his family have gone to China in line with this steel insulation program. He was hired to serve as Consultant by the Company to see to it that proper measures are undertaken to insure that insulation procedures are followed, because of the rigid demand for materials warranties. Not only will the warranty cover for the entire duration of the games, but probably thirty or more years.

My pal and his family left ahead of the games and have stayed behind after the last Olympic medal has been awarded to the winner. How lucky can one be?

It has been my dream to be one of the millions to witness an Olympic game, physically present in the venues of the summer spectacle. Thus when opportunity knocks, I never gave it a second thought, accepted the invitation right away.

I will be with my family in this trip to the 2008, Beijing, China, Olympic games. In fact as early as six months prior to the games, all our passports and visa's had been processed, my secretary had already booked our airline tickets and our hotel accommodations are waiting for us when we deplane at the Beijing International Airport.

I've followed the development of the different venues of the games and the preparations are quite impressive. The opening, closing ceremony, football (soccer) finals and most of the track and field events are to be held at the Bird's Nest National Stadium, literally shaped like one and designed by Architects Herzog and de Meuron.

I understand that most of the game venues have been completed as of March 2008, and early footage of the Bird's Nest Stadium reveals that the seating capacity shall be over 91,000. Meanwhile, the stadium floor where the various performances will take place has a giant spherical structure at the center and a huge Chinese flag beside it. From the photos it is not clear what it is or what is its function, spectators will just have to wait when the games commence.

We (my family) are all excited in this trip, we intend to be present in all the games and cheer for our delegation and savor the feeling of the Olympic fever as shared by the millions who shed time and finances to be in the games.

As I was looking through the files of my departed father, I chanced upon a magazine and newspaper clippings on the death and funeral of John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States of America. I never thought that my father was one of the millions of Americans who mourned the tragic loss of the President, he being a Republican by heart.

In the succeeding photographs, I could see the millions of mourners that lined the streets, staring blankly at the coffin draped zealously by a custom American Flag, followed by hundreds of dignitaries around the globe who came for the funeral. I can sense that the atmosphere must be deafening, with only the cortege of white horses and its thumping sound breaking the stillness of the occasion.

Also there were hundreds of condolences extended by Presidents and Heads of State of various nations coming from all over. Then as testament to the President's greatness and stature as a leader, are several articles written about how he handled situations that could have led to worldwide hostilities, if the same has not been ably addressed and a world war could have again erupted?

John Kennedy died by an assassin's bullet on November 22, 1963 and was laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963. He was accorded with a State Funeral unmatched in the entire history of the country, a procession that started at the Capitol, stopped briefly at the White House, then on to St. Matthew's and to the several miles trip to Arlington.

The caisson carrying the Presidents casket was pulled by six horses together with the National Color and the President's Flag, followed by the limousines and cars of hundreds if not thousands of mourners.

I was part of the history class that was on a trip to San Antonio in Texas to see more profoundly the site of the famous siege of the Alamo. Everybody on the trip was so excited to see the remnants or of what was left of the garrison walls after the Mexicans captured it, but not without enough lives being sacrificed.

While the siege of the Alamo continued to be hazy, the battle has come to symbolize heroic struggle against all odds, a place where gallant men stood ground and hold fort for thirteen crucial days and made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and gave meaning to the idea of dying for one's country. In fact as history would later confirm, the siege actually stopped the invading Mexican Army on its tracks.

The site of the siege was education at its finest, as each one of us witness the underlying events from a guided tour that gave us more relevant information and very entertaining response than reading the actual event in the history texts.

The death of the defenders of the Alamo, has served as the symbol for courage and sacrifice a price to shed for the cause of liberty, and a testament to the memories of James Bowie, David Crockett and William B. Travis.

Since everybody has been treated to a lesson in history, our trip would not have been complete without a visit to the museum store. It is here that most of us brought Alamo and Texas Flags and had it flown at the Alamo Shrine and dedicated to persons of our own choice.

The flags were then returned to us with a certificate insuring its authenticity.

After a successful Friday night-out with my buddies, I groped my way back to the condo intending to hit the sack by 12midnight. But after almost 30minutes under the sheets sleep just could not come, so using the remote control surfed the cable channel on my plasma TV. Just then a movie opened-up, a rerun of the PT-109 starring Cliff Robertson and a story of the exploits of John F. Kennedy during World War II, a film that I missed.

In one of the scenes, the PT-109 was cruising, regal in posture complete with all the outfitted armaments and an American flag billowing at the mast. It looks just one of the over 100 PT boats ordered by the Navy, to complement its naval armada. The boat is sleek being only 80feet in length weighs 40tons but has a cruising speed of 41knots. The boat has a crew of three officers and 14 sailors.

PT-109 was tasked to patrol the sea-lanes of the Solomon group of islands, an area that was controlled by the Japanese Imperial Navy. Since the boats can maneuver at top speed, it should be able to assist the US Navy in gathering information and thwart whatever naval maneuvers the enemy may device.

In one of its sojourn into enemy territory, a dark night it was rammed by a Japanese destroyer that split the boat in two and exploded in flames. Two crewmen immediately died and the rest survived including its skipper John F. Kennedy. A swimmer in college at Harvard, Kennedy secured the survivors and personally towed McMahon to a nearby island and swam back to look for help. On the water most of the time, he evaded enemy patrols and deadly shark attacks.

I used to envy friends that have their houses marked with "gone fishing" during the summer. I am not wealthy in a sense because my family does not own a vacation house in Florida or somewhere else. So together with my wife and son, we just frequent beaches during the summer months.

One time my close buddy and his family were vacationing to Switzerland, making their Florida vacation house free for the summer. He offered if I would be interested to take my summer in Florida, obviously before he can even complete his invitation, I already accepted. This time, my house will also have a "gone fishing" sign.

My cheery disposition may have shown on my face because my wife noticed immediately and after a few exchange, we were already deep in preparation for the trip. Right away, I asked government agencies concerned for fishing permits and shopped not only for food but also rods, fishing line and baits.

Off we go. The vacation house fronts one of the best freshwater fishing ground in Florida, it has a wooden pier and on it docked a medium sized boat. The next day the three of us were up and about at 5 in the morning, bringing to the boat provisions for the expedition. And when we are about to leave my son noticed that the mast does not have a custom boat flag. He alighted and ran to the garage and look for anything that could serve as makeshift flag. Luckily, he found from among the piles a medium sized American flag, one probably used during the 4th of July celebration.

So, with the flag hoisted we began our summer escapade.

As a child growing up in California, I have always been fascinated with the Statue of Liberty. In fact I had made countless sketches of My Lady based on photographs from textbooks and tourist flyers. I also know that the statue is a gift of the people of France to the citizens of the United States and that the construction of the Statue was a marvel at the time, since all the parts were pre-fabricated, brought to the site in crates and dutifully assembled.

I was twelve when my Mom asked me to join her in the trip to New York. Imagine my luck, since I was promised a visit to the famous Lady at the New York harbor. This will be the time to really grasp at the significance of the Statue as mentioned in the books.

On the very special day, we took the subway to Battery Park in Manhattan and boarded the ferry through reserve tickets we purchased a day earlier from the Internet. And true to my assessment, the Lady looks so serene, its beauty unparalleled, not a thing in the world could duplicate or even equal it in stature.

But what really amazes me was the method used to construct the Statue as could be gleamed inside, since our pass includes a visit to the inner sanctum of the Lady of the Harbor. I am inquisitive by nature, but the trip answered all the questions that had stayed idle in my mind.

Then when its time to go, we passed by the souvenir shop and brought dozens of My Lady custom miniature flags as gift to my friends.

Sadly I'm not a party person, I will try to shun parties if I can help it, I want to be alone. But there are times when I have to, particularly those that pertain to company mandated gathering which makes me uneasy and unfriendly.

One time my boss organized a luau party and everybody from the office are requested to attend for there will be some important announcement at the close of the party. I froze in my seat, what is a luau party anyway? Naturally since I am not oriented towards social norms in life, the word alone seems foreign. I have to do research from my laptop to be familiar with it, what to wear, eat and probably drink in the party, not become just a wasp in the wall.

When I arrived at the party venue, I immediately noticed a large luau flag patterned after a Hawaiian multi-colored shirt with leis of flowers and obviously together with dark sunglasses. The party was impressive set against the swimming pool as backdrop and hundreds of custom mini flags of different colors. The waiters are likewise attired in grass skirts and the men are in flower printed shorts and no shirt at the top.

Guests are offered leis as they enter and are offered fruit juices or punch made from rum and fruit juice. By the drinks and finger foods alone, you seem to have the extra push and not even noticed that you are already enjoying the party. When dinner was announced everybody were already in the festive mood and when authentic dancers danced the hula, some of the guests were happy gyrating with the tempo of the music.

It was one party I will never forget.

I missed my parents badly, they separated when I was still a tot and I grew up in the care of different foster families. But, the intervening years have been good if not the best. I had my share of 4th of July parties, flag day, thanksgiving and my foster parents sees to it that I could attend the best summer camps.

While I was stationed overseas, Asia in particular, that was the time when I craved for my parents company. Alone in a foreign land, I lived irritably, hardly a nice fellow to be with and really cynical about things that happen around me and in the office. But, I learned to accept the fact that I'm here to stay and slowly metamorphose into one lovable guy.

There are times though that I can't help but remember my parents who are probably in their golden years now and if they are happy with their new families and children. In one rare 4th of July, I asked a local Home for the Aged Institution - was it Golden Acres, I can't remember - if I could celebrate the day with them and in return I will provide the food and bring with me entertainers to spice up the occasion.

Well as I entered the social hall, I can't help but notice that it was decorated with American fan flags and the overall ambience was really patriotic with hefty use of reds, whites and blues.

I was introduced to the golden crowd and we had dinner, after which entertainers followed suit. Into the night all danced with the music provided, and I can almost feel that my parents are with the crowd.

It was the best 4th of July party I had in years.

I must hurry, or I would be late for our trip to San Diego. This weekend my group from the office had decided to skip town and just leisurely float with the crowd.

We hit the first gas station and saw that the price of gas is now 4.30dollars to a gallon. My friends were a bit apprehensive considering that our trip would cover no less than 200miles, including the trip back. What the heck, we planned this trip for some time and no amount of gas price increase could dim our enthusiasm. So, we just had to contribute some more.

The trip was worth it, because on the freeway we already saw a huge welcome street pole banner that seemed to embrace every person who saw it. Accustomed with seeing an ordinary banner where the welcome word is imprinted on a one-colored background, this particular banner we saw was a delight to see.

Traveling on the a freeway is definitely a nice experience these days, it used to be really boring particularly if you are driving alone and only the stretch of lonely highway and endless sights of green to accompany you. Nowadays, with the different banner that dots the freeway - political, social, advertising, awareness and also giant billboards - traveling has evolved as a truly engaging pastime.

Of course, our group had tales to speak of, but not with our driver who missed all the fun with his eyes all focused on the road.

I grew up among the poor folks in New York, attended public schools, literally crawled my way to college. That is, I was a recipient of a scholarship but had to do a lot of odd jobs to support myself in the process. But fate really had its way I was able to graduate and landed with a stable job.

Maybe due to my upbringing, I don't feel comfortable with people around particularly during parties. Even during company gatherings if I can help it would try to shy away, better for me to do overtime than party. Have I become anti-social?

But I enjoy being with the ordinary folks, the underprivileged, the poorest of the poor. One time, while I was stationed in Asia, I asked the local orphanage if I could sponsor a party to the orphaned children in time for my birthday. So instead of a party, I intend to spend the special day together with the orphans.

At the appointed day, I asked the services of the local fast food chain - was it Jollibee together with its mascot. They are to decorate the place, provide food and drinks to the children and a little show.

As I entered the orphanage hall, I was impressed with the preparation decked with decorative banners all over and a large Happy Birthday flag. Obviously seeing my name on the flag already made me really touched and happy, but when the orphans sang the happy birthday medley, I feel a lump in my throat and welts in my eyes.

This was the best Birthday celebration ever, and as memento, the children handed me a large and folded party banner.

By just looking at the street pole banners of the two films about the conquest of Iwo Jima, that is over half a century ago, was the invasion really necessary, and at the cost of thousands of lives on both sides. The depiction in the film just shows the brutality of war at the time, the show of ultimate conquest and victory for the invading American forces and the agony of defeat of the defending Japanese.

The first movie banner "The Flags of our Fathers" offers the perspective of war as viewed from the American side. The first movie was actually a cynical, skeptical, pointed view of arrogance as shown by the conduct of the American forces. It drives at all cost the idea of putting the enemies at bay, and eliciting sustained momentum by raising the American flag at the mount in Iwo Jima.

On the other hand the movie banner of "Letters from Iwo Jima" shows a forlorn image of a defender, actually different from the first but a remarkable achievement in itself. It offers a pure and lucid depiction and almost poetic vision as seen and understood through the eyes and language of the Japanese, a heroic and idealistic interpretation of duty and dying for one's country.

Comparisons have been made between the two films, but Clint Eastwood who shot the film back-to-back has shown vivid understanding of the poignant themes and images and how he did it is immeasurable, describing him as a machine, of course blessed with a mind and heart.

The film is shot in olive-and-brown color that makes it almost in black and white, but when explosions were shown on screen it created a horrifying contrast of brighter shades of orange and red.

Oh, my phone is ringing again and its not even 7am, do I need to rise and answer? Heavens no, it must be my friend calling we are to meet at a diner to roam the freeway and enjoy the political banners that are posted on the roadside. I must shower and get my digital camera ready, in case we find something really funny.

At the diner we ordered some bacon and eggs and consumed three cups of black coffee that should awaken our senses after a night of turning around due to bad dreams. I also noticed that our regular breakfast meal has gone a bit up, have they made some errors or they had just upped the cost since the price of gas has also risen. I am still not awake?

Then we are off to a fairly early start. What met us at the freeway was free speech written on the banner for everybody to digest. Our first banner has this "war is over if you want it," then after a few meters motorists are greeted with "we refuse to fight in a war started by men who refused to fight in a war," then after a few miles "live free or die" and then "the war is a lie and you know it." These are all political banners that describe the true sentiment of the citizenry regarding our involvement in the war.

Further on, what gave us a smile was "nobody died when Clinton lied," a testament to the administration just passed.

The trip was refreshing and our leaders must take the freeway sometimes, to enlighten them of the true pulse of the citizenry.

To give you an idea on the effectiveness of the political flags, consider that ten million Californians saw them.

I used to be a movie addict that is if seeing at least 6 movies during weekends is considered already out of the ordinary. Yes, my favorite pastime has been the movies and I do it during lulls, particularly from my college studies. Out of this passion for movies I have made a few observations on which movies would become a hit, or has a riveting story just by looking more closely on the movie banners displayed around the vicinity.

Although media hype and critic's acclaim would still be the moviegoer's yardstick, my own intuition even though how crude and insignificant still wins over by a scale 7 out of the 10. And because I scrutinize every movie banner that I come in contact to, I seem to have developed a sense into what type of movie personality that will best fit the character portrayed on screen.

Take the case of the Conan movie banner now being circulated, just one look at it, although no face is legibly shown would surely be associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger or the governor for that matter. I feel that only he can do justice to the personality, just like what he did to the Terminator series, and to think that this movie is still scheduled for release in 2009 is a question that the creator of the movie version has to deal with and hopefully passionately.

I can feel that I would not be disappointed once casting is made, because from the custom street banners, men behind the movie intends to cast someone with Arnolds caliber, the muscle bound physique, the acting skills and lots of charisma.

I just hope that my gut feeling will not fail this time.

If the opening ceremony of the Olympics highlights is the raising of the Olympic flag, then the lowering of the flag is the main agenda of the closing ceremony. Although it signifies the end of the games, it also signals the start of preparation for the next host to duplicate if not to overshadow the pomposity of the previous celebration.

The closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic games was held at the Athens Olympic Stadium, the venue for most of the games 16 days earlier had almost 70,000 spectators in attendance. Practically similar to the opening ceremony, it still showcased Greek culture and history through the repertoire staged by Greek actors, actresses and dancers, meant to show to the world its inherent culture and tradition.

The most awaited part of the closing ceremony was the exchange of the Olympic flag of the Antwerp games between the Mayor of Athens and the Mayor of Beijing, the city hosting the next Olympic games. Then right after the flag exchange, Chinese cultural dancers also members of the Chinese delegation staged a cultural presentation, giving the world a glimpse into what would literally happen in the next Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.

As tradition dictates, flag-bearer from each nation's contingent entered the stage, followed by the athletes en masse on the floor.

The National Anthem of Greece and China were then played as both the custom Greece flag and custom China flag were raised in a handover ceremony. The Olympic flag was then passed by the Mayor of Athens to its counterpart from Beijing and symbolically the Mayor of the host country declared that the 2004 Olympic Games has finally been closed.

In practically all Olympic games, the opening ceremony stood as the yardstick by which the success of the spectacle is gauged. Host countries make the opening ceremony of the Olympic games as a grand celebration that showcase not only the local culture but also the different sports venues, the clinical appearance of the Olympic village and also the security preparations to insure that everybody is well protected, that no untoward incident will ever transpire.

Take the case of the 2004 Olympic games in Greece, the opening ceremony alone has rendered the world in awe as it marked the first ever staging of the games covered live in high definition television, courtesy of NBC and NHK. It brought the unfolding of the opening ceremony to local TV screen worldwide in the most true to life images and in perfect color.

The opening ceremony of the summer games held on August 2008 had 72,000 spectators attending together with around 15,000 delegates or athletes representing 202 countries participating in the grand spectacle.

The opening ceremony started with a 28 second countdown - one for each Olympic staging held outside of Greece and with an amplified heartbeat as background. Then a blazing rocket representing a crashing comet seemingly coming out of the blue hit the stadium floor igniting a burning image of the Olympic rings. Then what followed is the grand display of the celebration of Greek culture and history with the appearance of a Greek lad obviously in a giant paper boat waving the Greece flag.

Then followed by the parade of nations, with the flag of Greece leading way, and contingent of each nation together with their flags and bearer parading in alphabetical order. The last contingent to enter the stadium was that of the host country.

Now that the Olympic summer games is about to start, August of 2008 in China, everybody not only the delegation representing each country is anticipating the test of strength, speed, stamina and how their preparation could fare in the spectacle.

The Olympic games happen only once in every 4 years, yet it generates a lot of enthusiasm worldwide and also economic gains to the country hosting the games, that is why host country's vying for the privilege are awarded the bid in advance to give them time to prepare.

The committee tasked with the staging of the games is seeing to it that all fronts are covered; from the sports venues; to the Olympic symbols, the flame, fanfare, the theme, and also the flag; to the Olympic village where delegates will be housed; and of course the security measures put forth to insure that nothing untoward will happen during the entire duration of the spectacle.

The Olympic games has a motto in Latin, "Citius, Altius, Fortius" which is "Swiftier, Higher, Stronger" in English, proposed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, a quote that was originally coined by Henri Didon, a Dominican priest. But another informal motto, "The most important thing is not to win but to take part" is the more famous and widely accepted worldwide, particularly to followers of the summer games.

Although we have lots of emblems to associate with the games, it will not be complete without the Olympic flag. The custom flag of the Olympic games has five intertwined rings of different colors, blue, yellow, black, green, and red are placed over a white background and represents the five continents of the world that has joined the Olympic Charter.

I recently toured a large banana plantation and I found some orange colored vertical banners hanging. Since they were really eye catching, I inquired from my guide as to what they really were, but then before he can make a reply, a small light aircraft made a pass and immediately we left and made our way to the field office.

While driving my guide informed me that it is never wise to be caught in the field when planes are making spray runs, because the pesticides are really toxic - some pesticides are even health hazards and proper warnings must be made so nobody can affected. Aerial sprays are necessary to rid the plantation of the dreaded sigatoka disease that could lay entire plantations to waste if not properly managed or the bract mosaic disease that could affect fruit yield.

While in the office, personnel were busy maneuvering the orange signal flags to be in position for the next spray run. I was informed that this orange banner is run by battery-powered motors, operated by remote control and attached to strong messenger cables. And it is through their computer monitors that they can pinpoint the actual locations of each. Once these are on track, they serve as trajectory for planes to follow during spray runs.

To put the orange flags in position is really tricky, since three sets usually work together, one at both ends of the field and one at the center. These three orange flags must be aligned before the plane can resume the spray run.

Quite ingenious, don't you think? This is an assurance that no plantation personnel are out in the field once aerial sprays are made.

As part of my on-the-job training, I was assigned to monitor the construction activities of the project being undertaken. Since it was the construction of our office building, I was required to submit a detailed activity report.

When I arrived at the site, the construction was still on its foundation stage but work was already in full throttle. There were actually four heavy equipment on the ground working simultaneously - the dozer, the grader, the backhoe and the payloader. The din of the equipment working together made normal conversation impossible, but equipment operators were splendidly doing the job assigned to them.

After some time, I noticed that the construction supervisor, the foreman and the equipment operator, do their on-site instructions through the use of custom signal flags.

For example, when the superintendent raised a flag, the dozer immediately backed off, the payloader advances in position and awaits the entry of large dump trucks to clear the area of debris. And as another flag was raised, the large dump trucks left the area.

Or there was a time when a flag was raised and the dozer and backhoe worked hand in hand to dig deeper and when another flag was raised, the grader entered the picture and leveled off the ground.

So, it came to my understanding that even if field personnel had radios on, they are still totally dependent on construction flags or markers to relay their instructions to field operators, simply because conversation was at a very limited range considering the noise generated by the equipment.

I was still at the foundation stage of the work, so expect additional use of the construction marker as work progresses up.

While still in Makati (the Philippines), I was asked by my close Filipino friend to stand not just as sponsor but also as Ninong (Godfather) to his wedding. So, since I was still young then, my presence might not really serve the purpose intended - this is actually my first brush with the intricacy of tying the knot. But, he insisted and reasoned that being a foreigner would do well with his in-laws.

Off we go, we started out by asking the hand of her fiance in marriage. Although they both met and became sweethearts in the big city, it is customary that we go to the barrio and ask the parents in a formal ceremony.

As part of the rite, we have to bring in food and drinks because it becomes the duty of the groom to feed the family of the bride during this special occasion. In fact my friend said, that he was happy that his in-laws has a modern perception of marriage, because nothing was asked as dowry as guarantee for the marriage. In the olden times, grooms were obliged to offer gifts like a few hectares of land, jewelries, a dozen heads of cattle, 100 goats or maybe a thousand chicken.

So, donned in traditional Barong (suit used during formal occasions) we went to her hometown. I immediately noticed that the residence had a makeover, complete with buntings and a few floral design flags posted on the entrance gate. We were ushered in, and immediately the ritual began. My friend formally asked that they be married and I in turn stood as solitary witness to his noble intension.

Then the wedding date was agreed upon and a few names were mentioned responsible for the wedding preparation and dinner was served to seal the agreement.

Although our company deals with computer hardware and accessories, our sister company is into farming implements, fertilizer and pesticides. So, when they purchased a demonstration farm we were invited to its inauguration.

The farm lot was divided into plots with each plot separated by a paddy. Since the intended demo crop is rice, the plot is irrigated and water is almost 6 inches deep. Then a few farmers were asked to plant the rice seedlings on the designated plots and likewise fertilizer was applied. Since there are different types of fertilizers, one type was used for each plot to determine by contrast the effectiveness of the product.

Then each plot was provided with a flag marker and recorded, so that only the fertilizer initially used would also be used to the succeeding application. As the plants grew, pesticides were likewise scheduled on the different plots and a new marker was assigned, so only the designated pesticide would be used.

On the rear portion of the farm was a plot that is intended to be organic, meaning rice would be allowed to grow on its own, fertilizer to be used would be natural and pesticides would be totally banned. And a new different marker was used, to avoid confusion as to what plot needs to have fertilizers and pesticides.

Looking at the system just used, the overall effect was festive because the flag markers came in different colors, red, yellow, blue, lavender and what have you while green is assigned to the organic plot.

Well, we never run out of ideas, particularly when and how flags and markers are used to make things much easier.

During the season of lent, mountain climbing to Mount Apo (the highest mountain peak in the Philippines) has been the favorite destination for both local and foreign tourists. But local authorities had to close the annual event, simply because contingent of tourists has caused irreparable damage to the environment. Rare plant, particularly wild orchids has been documented to be spirited to Manila, while a lot of trash has piled along the route.

For five long years the Mount Apo has been allowed to rejuvenate, nobody was allowed on top. Then just last month, our company was asked to be one of the few to scale the peak once again, not as tourists but as part of the group that will restore the damaged ecology.

We booked a flight to Davao City and then took a van to Kidapawan, the jump off point for our trek to the famed mountain. At the foot, we carried not just provisions, but also 12, 24inch tree mahogany seedlings and trash bags. The idea is at designated areas we are to plant each the 12 plants to help in the reforestation efforts of Mount Apo.

It took us three days to reach the peak, and as customary we planted the custom flag of the company and posed for posterity. The view from the top of the Apo was really magnificent and the temperature was refreshingly cold, but pales in comparison to my winters in New York.

Then we started back, but we have to pick whatever trash has been left behind, because each one of us will be made to pay a fine of a few hundred pesos if we cannot present a bagful of garbage to the local control officers.

Flag flying at half-mast is an age-old tradition of signifying our unity for the respect of a fallen hero, a dead President or high-ranking official, for the exemplary deed that one has exhibited in the service for one's country.

Our fallen comrades who sacrificed their lives in Iraq to further our ideals are somewhat honored by flying the flag at half-mast. It is by decree of the State Governor that such honor and recognition is expressed, paving the way not only of the State Flag but the National Flag as well to be flown at half-mast.

So, it does not come as a surprise when Governor Jon S. Corzine of New Jersey decreed that the flag be flown at half-mast to honor its local hero, Army Private Ronald Ray Harrison who died in the line of duty in Iraq. The same respect is also granted to Petty Officer 1st Class Cherie L. Morton of the US Navy, as decreed by Governor Blagojevich of Illinois as tribute for her extraordinary service to the country. They are just two of the many who did the same and likewise been honored by a grateful citizenry.

Though this occasion is sad, it is a time to honor, remember and pay our respect and admiration to those who made the ultimate sacrifice of "dying for one's country." Likewise our ardent prayer goes to the families and friends left behind. This is also a moment to thank all the brave men and women not only of the Armed Forces but also to all members of the various law enforcement agencies for their commitment to justice, equality and world peace.

We could do no better, hurrah to our heroes.

Are you a member of a service-oriented club? The United States having a cache of resources and a citizenry polarized to share with the poor, have several of these service clubs. To name a few, we have the Rotary International, the Kiwani's Club International, The Jaycees, the Lions International and so on.

These clubs started out to help alleviate the conditions of the poor folks of the United States, but since the country and citizenry has become sufficient, such clubs has decided to export their clout to foreign developing countries. The idea is to promote worldwide brotherhood, and to be really effective they allow partnership.

So, most are found in the poorer sections around Asia, some in Africa as it somehow helped in the process of giving aid, financial resources, food, clothing, shelter and even medical services to the impoverished member of society.

When I was assigned in Asia, I joined as a member of the Rotary International, Makati Chapter that is in the Philippines, and our services reached the hinterlands of Benguet bringing assistance to the natives. With our Rotary Custom Flag in tow, we visit families to provide food and medical assistance and always we are greeted and treated fairly as harbinger of hope and prosperity.

When a Barangay Captain (village chieftain) showed us the difficulty of crossing a river, we constructed a hanging footbridge from the funds we seek from our club in the United States. Or we donated hundreds of volumes of textbooks for a local school, and even made a waiting shed for the local folks, when one was damaged by a typhoon.

Typically the Rotary International Flag is now synonymous with service and is anticipated worldwide.

Three friends, bosom buddies since college, decided to take a vacation with a difference. Since they were all nature lovers they agreed to take the Sheraton International package, bringing them to the Iguazu National Park in Argentina.

The modern resort was enshrined facing the Devil's Gorge, the most spectacular of the Iguazu waterfalls and lay amidst a backdrop of the world heritage site.

Their first day at the resort was uneventful, since just like any other tourists, they had tour guides to acquaint them of the sites and beautiful places. Then on the second day, they ventured on their own to the deep rainforest of the National Park.

Waking up early the next day and with a few provisions they were on their trek to the natural environment. True to their observation, they encountered several types of rare exotic birds, plants and butterflies. They were so engrossed with their adventure that they missed seeing that they were already deep into the dense rainforest. By about three in the afternoon, they stopped and had lunch, and maybe due to exhaustion they dozed off.

When they awoke, it was already three quarters after four and immediately they started to trek back. Since light could not penetrate the thick foliage, they missed the signs and continued to walk in circles. To their dismay they were lost and since it was almost dark, continuing to trek would be futile.

To know their bearings, one climbed a tree and with the use of binoculars, they were able to see clearly the series of hotel flags on top of the resort. So, with the custom hotel flags as their guide, they finally reached the clearing, just on the edge of the rainforest. From then on, the rest of the way was easy.

The typhoon forecast was due North West, so not on the path of the storm 29 fishermen from the Northeastern provinces of the Philippines put out to sea. But then, the recent typhoon veered and took the North East direction instead, hitting the fishermen directly. What was then a fishing expedition turned into a nightmarish ordeal for survival.

The fishing boat was heavily battered by the onslaught of the storm as strong waves and howling wind capsized and split to pieces the small vessel. Naturally the fishermen were thrown into the sea, but 12 miraculously survived and clung to what was left of the boat. By early morning they found that the boat flag was still intact, and to catch attention they had it flying erect.

Then as they drifted listlessly, cold, heavy rain and hunger took its toll. As they lay inutile and hopeless for a while, the majority could not endure the hunger and seeing that not a thing to eat is available, took hold of the boat flag and started munching on it. They actually survived with only the boat flag as food.

So, for four horrible days and nights they braved the weather and finally were washed ashore 300 miles away from their point of origin. People from the locality brought them to the nearest hospital for treatment.

When TV crews of the local station saw them at the hospital, despite being weak from exhaustion, hunger and starvation, all the twelve were cheerful and one in the conclusion that what saved them from possible demise was the boat flag that served as their sustenance.

Lately though, with the aid of the air force helicopter they were brought back to their respective provinces.

In a recent masquerade party to raise funds for the lung cancer treatment and awareness drive, many came in costumes, reminiscent of the times of royalty, of pirates in the Caribbean, in exotic pacific get-ups and even space odyssey overalls. It was a gathering of the personalities that defined our history.

Although some came dressed as cohorts of Henry IV, two came as Napoleon and his Lady, one was dressed as George Bush, the other resembles Hillary Clinton, and one even came disguised as Barack Obama. But the stars of the party belong to the squad each of Confederate soldiers and Union Officers, dressed to the hilt with the legendary boots, cap, complete with muskets and their authentic custom flags.

Everybody enjoyed the arrival scene, because they came in as if true adversaries with their menacing looks, bullying their way around while also waving their flag. But, before the party ends, they can be seen huddled and drinking together, exchanging jokes and obviously enjoying every minute of it.

Due to the success of the party and participants living up to the person they mimicked, as it was also splashed across the front page of the local daily, it generated so much attention that the proponents of the benefit party were able to raise a considerable amount of money to add to their coffers for the fight against lung cancer.

It was a party where guests enjoyed to the hilt, and patients likewise taking the benefit from the funds generated.

All benefit parties must be done with a lot of flair, so patrons will be too willing to part with their dollars.

I was once invited to a terrific party where the venue had a casino like atmosphere. If you had been to the gambling capital of the United States, you will most certainly know what I'm talking about.

Firstly we were asked to come to the party in our formal attire, an appropriate request since even at the entrance a high stakes casino sign greets guests. Inside, while no actual gaming was being played, the hired helps were all attired to duplicate casino employees, in black pants, white shirts complete with dealers visors and vests.

On one end of the hall was a pair of really authentic slot machines, while the bar faces three sets of original gaming table with still a serviceable custom poker felt . While all the tables are also draped with tablecloths that look like customs made poker felts straight from the game room. Likewise, the cups, the plates, the napkins and cutlery are all devised to mimic a casino arrangement.

To complete the atmosphere, the center of the hall had a three-tired chandelier Vegas style and the walls had giant playing cards plastered on it. The over-all effect is glitzy and as if you are in a gaming room and not in one of the suburbs of San Diego.

The party was really superb, there were even times when I almost tipped the waiters thinking that I am in Vegas. Whoever thought of a party that resembles a casino should be congratulated, because for once guests had enjoyed and had a swell time.

Next time that you throw a party, make it a casino themed revelry, for I'm sure, guests will really appreciate a unique celebration.

When I joined this company four years ago, I felt that the employees were amiable, friendly and supportive to new faces like me. This is a far cry from my previous employment since each bullies each other to get the attention of the management and thus reap the benefits at stake. Also because of the atmosphere, employees perform better, the production output is much higher and labor problems are almost non-existent.

Deep into the third month of my employment, I found out that the source of this nice working environment was our HR boss. He is respected because of his work ethics and the temerity for proper decorum, as he always listen to employee complaint, do remedial measures and elevate matters to management if solutions could not be reached at his own level. Even the annual employee performance evaluation is met and accepted by the employees without any reservations, although this is a source of conflict in other companies.

Just when I thought that I'm in for the long haul, management suddenly announced that our HR boss is retiring having reached the mandatory age limit. To mark this sad occasion, a farewell party is to be held.

We on our part prepared miniature banners with a company logo and our HR boss name printed on it, and had it posted inside the party venue. Our intention is to have it signed by our boss at the end of the party as a parting memento. In return we are to hand the company flag, together with a streamer with all our names written on it.

The office never looked the same without our HR boss, but we are happy with the thought that he is probably holed up in some cove in Florida.

The coming of age of our children is always a joyous celebration, and parents and relatives embrace this celebration with too much gusto and with all stops pulled out, so they say. From around the world, to the America's, Europe and Asia, coming of age celebration is eagerly awaited and anticipated. As this is the transition as a child passes from a toddler to teens (thirteen for boys and twelve for girls), this event must be memorable.

In Japan, for example, the coming of age celebration is marked as a national holiday, where families can enjoy the festivities.

Our neighborhood marks this special event as the bar/bat mitzvah, a coming of age celebration that has a religious commemoration. This event is typically noted on a Saturday (Sabbath) morning service where verses of the Torah are recited. In fact the Saturday ritual is just part of the celebration, because the entire bar/bat mitzvah could involve the entire week, depending on the desire of the parents or relatives.

Venues for the bar/bat mitzvah celebration are always geared to be colorful, with lots of bar mitzvah banners and mini flags hung around the walls or ceiling. Normally these banners have prepared slogans printed on it like "Sarah is coming of age" or "Mark is finally at it," some may have other words, but it always pertains to the one coming of age.

Bar mitzvah celebration is not only confined to what is traditionally practiced, but it goes with the times and different themes are observed. Since it is a weeklong celebration, some may opt for choices like, celestial, music, or maybe stars, some may want sports, others luau, there is really no set rules to follow.

A large business corporation is not all work, but there are also times when all members of the organization gather and party together. A case in point is the founding anniversary where it is celebrated with a party and everybody is requested to attend. This is the time where each employee can loosen up, rub elbows with the executives and be one of the boys and enjoy the celebration.

Normally, if the company can afford especially after a really successful year the gathering could be held at a hotel ballroom, or a convention center or maybe at the company social hall. But, always a committee will be formed to handle food preparation, party invitation, program, guests, reception, and of particular importance is the venue decoration.

In any event, it starts with a party theme and a slogan is made part of it. From there planning for the celebration emanates.

To keep the party with a personal touch, print company banners or order custom miniature flags with the logo, maybe with the slogan but also include employees names on each to give due importance to the members. Had it posted and hung on the walls, ceilings, corridors where it can be visible to employees. All members of the organization will appreciate when they see their name on the banners as it increases camaraderie and improve staff and executive relations, a good enough incentive to increase productivity, while these banners also serve as souvenir for the party.

Additional effort must also be made on the table settings, use custom made tablecloths with the company logo, cups, plates, napkins and cutlery, because when these are properly arranged it's an impressive focal point of the party.

One night I was asked by my wife to drive her to a baby shower intended for an officemate. Our agreement was to fetch her after the party, but as I was approaching the venue a large inflatable stork carrying a personalized baby banner greeted us at the entrance. I was really impressed with the design and without my knowing it I was beaming and really happy. Never in my life had I experienced being in a baby shower.

In as much as the party have not started, I asked my wife if I can have a look inside. Just then the hostess appeared and I was toured inside. The interior was ready for the party, lengths of streamers were beautifully attached to the chandelier at the ceiling, from the center of the room and cascades down to the walls and each ended with a cusp and a large custom baby flag.

The effect was stunning, especially when the chandelier was lighted and magnified the different shades of the streamers, although pastel in color it gave an impression of subdued brilliance and elegance. No doubt with a party place as grand as this, the mother to be, would be totally in awe and speechless. I’m sure the whole evening would not be enough to let her friends know that they have exceeded her expectation and a thank you, though how often would not suffice.

When on our way home, I asked my wife if all baby showers are like it particularly when she had our baby. Well to my amazement, she just said times are changing and professionals are now hired to make parties as nice as we had just seen.

A family of four was traveling cross-country to visit their folks on Christmas Day. Snowfall was really heavy, a situation that could make the roads impassable. Adding to their predicament they were caught in a blizzard along the way and could no longer navigate, so literally they were stalled for the night. Luckily, the family was able to call for help before their communication lines went dead.

At least in a situation like this, help is coming but the only question is how to locate the stranded car in the sea of snow. And most likely snow must have covered the vehicle, so it would be next to impossible for air rescue to spot and thus hinder aid to the family.

But, the family had an emergency identification banner complete with grommets and tie ropes and had it draped over their vehicle. The result, the air-rescue team was able to pinpoint their actual location and they were hauled out in no time at all. I even saw the actual rescue effort on TV.

What are identification banners or emergency flag markers? These are fluorescent emergency banners, 2' by 6' in dimension, one side is bright orange (means this is the place or this is me) and the other side is bright pink (and means do not land here). This provides high visibility for rescuers scanning the horizon or through binoculars, particularly if you are stranded due to storms.

This type of banners had been in use by the Army Pathfinder and Air Force Combat Control Teams in their rescue operations. In fact these are called the Visual Signal Model 17 Panel, or simply VS-17 Panel.

So, have one in your trunk, who knows when you will need it.

What would you do if your car suddenly stalled in the middle of nowhere? Well if you are familiar with the mechanism, the first thing you would automatically do is to check the system most likely to fail and try to revive the engine. Then if this fail, at this age and time with your cell phone, the second option is call for help, and the nearest mechanic available would help you in your predicament. But, what if you are in a blind spot? Naturally your mobile phone will not work, what then?

The last option is to seek for help available in the area, by depending on the good people, probably passersby and other drivers plying the area. And to be really realistic and sure that they would know what is wrong with your vehicle is to post your emergency car banners. This way you will be visible even at a distance and help will surely come.

Is there such a thing as emergency car flags? Yes, in fact experts suggests that a set of this must always be a standard item in your car, so if all forms of communication fail this can be relied upon.

How does it look and where is it available? As in all emergency this banner is based on universal signals used by everybody for help and obviously safety. It usually comes in a light yellow background that provides maximum contrast to the black letters. So, it is visible day or night as each banner had "call police" or "call tow" prints on it and also the entire package comes with fasteners for ease in installation.

Always equip your car with emergency car banners, and be ready for any eventualities.

Getting married is a milestone in one's life and the moment is usually marked with a fun, crazy, raucous and wild party. Usually the friends of the bride will plan and hosts the all girl's party, from the location, to decorations, to foods and entertainment. Some bachelorette parties are held on hotel suites, at a nightclub or even at exclusive diners, but mostly they are made on venues that the bride frequent, a living room perhaps or a large bedroom.

When the venue is a living room, then the hosts must be obliged to decorate the place. Normally the decorations will be based on the wedding motif, but never underestimate the appeal of bachelorette banners and balloons. It will bring the aura to a new dimension, particularly the banners because it could be made of the bride and grooms favorite color and printed with "Mary is finally settling down" or "Mack and Mary forever". There are other sets of words to be printed, so long as it pertains to the two tying the knot. These custom wedding flags could also serve as souvenir of the wedding.

From the looks of it the venue will have a distinct atmosphere, but don't stop there, you still have the tables and chairs to contend with. And in most cases the table cover, the napkins, the cups, the saucers and even the spoons and fork will also be decorated with the same motif.

Aside from the venue, foods and drinks, the most important part of the celebration is the entertainment medium, see to it that everybody will have a part and enjoy the moment.

For after all, the transition from a bachelor to a married woman must always be coupled with a really unforgettable party celebration.

As the holiday approaches and patriotic fever catches us, we can only anticipate a few days of rest, slouch in front of the TV, have time to read, but most would be happy to join a 4th of July party. This is the time to really express your American spirit, organize a party.

How to plan your party? First of all, start planning at least three weeks before the fourth of July, because of the expected holidays your friends might have other activities in mind, some would be on vacation, others will have family gatherings. But if you can send your invitation early, then they might opt to be in your party.

Make your invitation as patriotic as possible maybe include a mini American flag with it. And once you have the complete guest lists, then decide on a budget and design your decorations to aptly suggest a really patriotic atmosphere.

Start your makeover outdoors, maybe line your driveway with flags on the posts; decorate your patio with flag garland and buntings; or pamper your wall with a large fan flag to spice-up the already fiery ambience. Devise an American arch at the entrance and hang a personalized 4th of July banner to welcome your guests to the party or perhaps display a banner to wish your neighborhood a happy holiday. The possibilities are endless.

Do the same touches on your tables and chairs. Drape your tables with appropriate cover and provide each with red, white and blue skirting, with matching table napkins, cups and cutlery.

Be ready for a long party, since most 4th of July parties starts off in the afternoon and lasts up to midnight and early morning. And usually a 4th of July party ends with the fantastic display of fireworks.

The United Nations have had a positive impact to the world due to its various humanitarian responses to the needy. You can see the United Nation's flag flying in and around the hotspots of the world; to the different NGO's that has been recipients to the UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) assistance on the plight of children and mothers; to the development of science and technology that will benefit mankind ultimately; and even to the use and control of nuclear energy in order not to jeopardize the existence of mankind.

But, what really amazes us is the UNICEF's desire to feed the hungry children of the world, and mind you it's not really that easy, considering that it could reach over a billion individuals to feed. They can be seen in the far-flung barrios in Asia, to the crevices of the poor in Africa; and even to war ravaged areas, not minding the risk just to extend help to those who really are suffering.

The program of the UNICEF is focused primarily on five priorities; basic education and gender equality (including girl's education); child development and survival; child protection from violence, exploitation and abuse; HIV/AIDS and children; and policy advocacy and partnership for children's right.

Not only is UNICEF out to avert the incidence of famine, but are as well fine-tuned to the new challenges like the spread of AIDS/HIV to the children in areas like Africa and India. They have channeled their thrusts to education of children, because only the right amount of knowledge can transform and correct taboo's practiced in society.

For their effort, they have raised a total of 2.78 billion dollars for 2006, to help them fund the different projects worldwide.
