What are visual distress signals and where are they used?

The United States is blessed with an abundance of coastal waters, the great lakes, territorial seas and recreational boats ply these routes. When boats crisscross these water lanes, accidents are bound to happen and it is on this premise that a federal requirement and safety tips for recreational boats have in issued.

First on its list is the visual distress signal that include pyrotechnic based and second the non-pyrotechnic based visual distress signals. What comes in handy is the orange distress flag, the least used of the signals but is still required because when other system fails this could still be relied on. But this is only used during the day and it must at least be 3 x 3 feet with a black square and ball on an orange background. It should meet Coast Guard requirement in 46 CFR 160.072.

The distress flag must be visually distinctive when attached and waved on a paddle, boathook, or simply flown from a mast. And also it could be effective as an attention getter in an emergency if it is attached to balloons, kites, and floating streamers.

At night, the orange distress flag will have to give way to a much more effective way of sending distress signals, like the flares (pyrotechnic based) - could be red flares, hand held or aerial; orange smoke, hand held or floating; and through launchers, most commonly the aerial red meteors or the parachute flares.

In the absence of flares, electric light signals will have to be used by flashing the internationally accepted SOS distress signal.

Remember Kosovo? Who would forget the war torn images as vividly shown in footages presented by the world media for us to see. Kosovo was a bloody mess as ethnic violence pervaded the streets and it could not be described even as just war but chaos to the first degree. Violence was everywhere and 280,000 of those who could not bear the atrocities fled the area for safety to some havens.

Then to ease up violence a convoy of UN Peacekeepers entered the picture, all vehicles carried the United Nation's flag and the forces were dressed in combat fatigues topped with the now famous blue beret or helmets. What the hell are these UN personnel doing in Kosovo? They will be sitting ducks and easy targets for snipers on both sides, what were they thinking and hope to accomplish?

The UN Security Resolution No.1244 of 1999 has authorized the deployment of the elite NATO led UN Peacekeepers that placed Kosovo under transitional administration to avert further violence and bloodshed. This move was made and mandated by the UN Charter, after a Peace Treaty has been signed and put into effect by the contending parties. The main duty of the peacekeepers is to monitor and document whatever violations committed by the parties to the peace accord.

Well as it turned out, a semblance of peace has been attained and ironed out and moves are underway for the withdrawal of the UN Peacekeepers and administration will be given back to the local authorities.

Lets pray for the successful transition of government administration in Kosovo, and that the UN brokered peace initiative stays. Lasting peace is well on the way, finally.

50years as husband and wife could already be classified as stuff made for the Guinness Book of World Records. Considering that divorce comes in handy in the United States, lasting marriages are becoming very rare.

So, when I was invited to a 50year-wedding anniversary I really grab at the opportunity to witness this almost historic event. This was purely a family affair as can be seen from the guest's list. The patriarch of the family had produced eight siblings and the siblings had managed a total of seventy-five grandchildren, while 15 great grandchildren already in offing. Put them all packed together in one place, like the church and reception, then you have a whole community.

The affair starts at the church with the renewal of vows. The church and reception area was not designed for a usual wedding, although there were still bunches of flowers all over, what caught my attention were the anniversary flags that vie for the attention of the guests. I stared at one closely and found 50 and anniversary written neatly on it, although the color of the flag was in pastel, not bright as I expected.

As the entourage started walking "Oh how we danced on the night we were wed" could be heard softly from an invited guest or was it a recording from Bing Crosby, I'm just not certain. But the rendition was so extraordinary that I dreamed, I could also tread the same path someday. Although I feel that it needs a lot of resolve to be married for this long.

At the reception what happened at the church was the exact opposite. With everybody part of the family, it was riotous, rowdy and really fun.

I read an article about a man, 90 years old, living alone and unable to call for help because his phone line had been dead for 30 days. And he could not even walk freely outside his residence since he had been disabled for quite some time.

What the heck, he must have a cell phone always within reach so someone can come in any emergency. But a man of his age may not know a cell phone exists and if he had one it would be next to impossible for him to operate or even touch the button; otherwise, what if his place is a dead spot for cell phone signals?

In his case, he just sat beside by the window and hope to catch the attention of passersby. Luckily two small girls on an errand saw his situation and called the police. What if it was really an emergency?

The next big thing for him would be to use "please call police banners," strip the flag out of the case and post it on his windowpane, and some Samaritan would be able to call for help. Shouting and extending bodily gestures may not help in an emergency.

Does a "please call police banner" really exist, how does it look? First of all this type of banner is three feet long and nine inches wide, in a sense it really is a strip. This is painted in emergency orange and has an adhesive strip on its top and bottom. In any emergency simply post the banner and help would come.

This is important if you are traveling alone in a car, at least have a pair to post in your windshield should you need help.

Why do festivals always have flags, what does it signify? Recollection of this cultural development dates back to the ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition of hanging flags "to put the world in harmony with itself", and also as a wish for passage into a new territory, a new town perhaps or when moving into a new home.

Practice had it that to achieve harmony with a new environment one must hang flags that would represent the five different elements; yellow for water; green for earth; red for fire; white for air and blue for space. And all of these flags must be decorated and hand painted with symbolic drawings and must have words of hope normally in fine lettering.

Aside from harmony that the flag brings, these festive and colorful symbols reminds us of basic human values; it starts with compassion; one must always exhaust his patience; always practice wisdom; must have a big reserve for understanding; and above all love not just for oneself but to all, not for any particular individual but the environment as well.

Children likewise who join the festival, must select a square of colored fabric and together with a knife create a dream or wish flag with their parent or friend, so the elements will be able to provide the type of balance for each hopes and ambition to be fulfilled.

So, flags are not really devised for decorative purposes only but were created with a special intent for everybody to be more conscious and take care of our environment.

Strive for success, preserve our environment, hang these festival flags.

June is almost over, have you already planned your wedding? Then here's for the book.

Tired of the usual wedding arrangement, particularly the venue setting? Then it is time to add color to this special day by using wedding flags. This style has been a standard practice during Balinese weddings, though in the genuine settings white has always been used.

Balinese white wedding flags are traditionally called umbul umbul could be the special ornament that you have been looking for. Wedding is a once in a lifetime affair and to make it really special, imagine walking in an aisle flanked with these Balinese flags fluttering in the wind, what a great backdrop for your photo and video memento.

If you are the daring type, you can opt for other colors instead of white but select one that typifies your personality and satisfies the meaning of the hue. For starters, white is for purity, humility, balance and divine healing; purple is for calmness, intuition, and soothing spiritual perspective; blue covers inspiration, faith, devotion, understanding and contentment; while pink suggests harmonious relationship and love. There are still other colors available, just grab a copy of the list and plan from there.

Also these flags are not only effective as a wedding ornament but advertisement as well. Just add your company logo, then eureka! You have an instant product endorsement with only minimal cost. You have completed the most important phase in your life and also gave a decent exposure to your company.

Besides these flags can also be distributed to guests as souvenir for the affair.

One of the best times to visit Japan is on July as it coincides with the Gion Yamagasa (Matsuri Festival). This festival happens before and after the fourth Saturday of July, Friday through Sunday and for three days the Yamagasa is paraded around town. This is culture at its best in Japan.

What is a "Yamagasa"? Officially, these are very large colorful floats and the focal point of the festival. Actually the four regions (Higashi, Nishi, Tenraiji and Nakabaru) builds each a large Yamagasa for the men, small one for boys intended solely for the festival. So, all in all there are eight main floats during the festival.

During the day the large floats with twelve great flags hoisted are carried for the parade, followed by the smaller floats for children. But at night, all the floats are transformed into a flotilla of pyramids of light-huge lanterns complete with colorful decorations. Each Yamagasa with 12 layers of 309 lanterns, 10 meters high, and over 1.5 tons in weight is carried on the shoulders of about 100 men.

As the entourage moves around town it lights the surrounding landscape and the effect is truly breathtaking. To move the Yamagasa is in itself already an art, because it needs the concerted effort of each of the 100 carriers. And to be certain that it glides successfully, carriers all in unison shout "yoitosa, yoitosa" in rhythmic chant accompanied by drums and cymbals.

This festival is actually a celebration as all the villagers who in 1802, were cured from an epidemic through the intercession of Suga-taijin.

I am fascinated with businesses that display proudly our Old Glory and it gave me the urge to interview owners about the impact of this symbol to their sales in particular. To the majority they cannot quantify the effect, but many were using the flag only to show their patriotism and support for our troops sent to hot spots around the world.

On the other hand, I tried to talk to consumers who frequent these establishments and they have nice things to say. A war veteran who came in for coffee has been enticed by the presence of the US flag as it offers warmth and a feeling of camaraderie. It seems that you are entering again into the company of comrades and mingle intimately with your buddies.

A housewife and her kid who obviously is out for her weekly grocery shopping picked this particular establishment because of the presence of the American flag. This gave her a sense of security, that nothing could go wrong especially after 911. She used to be critical of people and stare at them blankly for any clues as to their intention, but in this store she can rest her fears and do what she had to do - shopping.

For an out of town executive who roamed around town and was looking for neat a place for lunch, luckily found this place flying the American flag. Rightfully he feels this must be the best watering hole this side of town.

So, owners of this establishment may not be aware of the attraction given by the flag, but the fact remains that clients patronize, again because of the flag.

If you are a Christian, you must have witnessed the pilgrimage of the Pope to the Holy Land that happened during the month of March 2000. Why did the Pope take the risk? The obvious reason is of course to reduce the tension between the Muslims, the Christians and the Israelites; and considering that this is the first trip of any Holy Father to this part of the world, this is indeed historic.

Since Jordan is the first stop for his itinerary, what preparations were made? For once the people of Jordan were united in welcoming the Pope, as hundreds of papal flags were posted and thousands of Jordanian mini flags were waved by well-wishers at the pilgrimage route. And to think that Christians only comprise 4% and Sunni Muslims the rest of the population, the event really transcends whatever divides the devotees.

Why was Jordan chosen as the first stop? Well from the Bible Mount Nebo is east of the city Madaba in Jordan, it overlooks the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley which fronts Jericho and Jerusalem.

This area is significant to the Christian faith since it was here that God showed Moses the Promised Land and with succinct instructions that he can only see it but not able to cross the Jordan river nor occupy it. Again it is in Mount Nebo that Moses the servant of the Lord spent his final days and died in the land of Moab.

So, from Moses memorial in Mount Nebo the Pope will meet with 40 local church leaders and will then proceed to the Apostolic Nunciature in Abdoun.

Would you believe that there exist a Tibetan prayer flag? In practically all known religions around the world, the use of flags have been universal. The Christians have devised their own flag, so do with the other denominations who had various applications for flags, and the Catholics have their set of flags as well designed after flags used by the Vatican.

However, if you travel to Tibet you will see a lot of unique and colorful flags or the bon prayer flags or sutras. This set of flags are normally strung by a rope and attached to poles of houses.

Does it have a religious significance? Yes, it was part of their religious life before the indoctrination of Tibet into Buddhism and the bon belief was the dominant religion of the people then. The sutra was part of the indigenous bon religion and today it is still used sparingly but merely as a religious decoration. Having lost its religious significance, sutras still dominates the landscape as their colors are
attractive and stands out from afar, although looking at it closely it shows pictures or text as well as prayers printed on it.

Aside from the sutras, Tibet also hung thangkas - a revered art form usually made from cotton, rectangular in shape and artistically made through the precise application of ink dyes. To complete the cultural feel of Tibet, a circular flag like ornament the mandala is added as it always had religious meaning - associated with good luck or protection, healing and care for the sick.

So, if your intention is a vacation that can provide you with an environmental mooring, then a trip to Tibet will be the answer.

A business associate arriving from a trip handed me a souvenir banner - a Kentucky Derby mini flag . He was actually grinning from ear to ear having actually witnessed the horse races at the famed Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. I gather that he had a free pass to the derby and together with the other 155,000 spectators braved the spectacle held during the first Saturday of May, the culminating event of a two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival annually.

I found out later on that the Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year old thoroughbred horses and it is popular in the United States as the "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," simply stated being the actual duration of the race. It is also known as the "Run for the Roses," again because the annual winner of the Kentucky Derby is draped with a blanket of 554 roses as part of his winning price.

Actually the Kentucky Derby run is only for a mile and a quarter race and the distinction of having the fastest time is held by Secretariat at 1 minute 59 2/5 seconds, set in 1973 after it broke the old record of Northern Dancer in 1964. This record time has now stood for 35 years and counting as nobody has come close to beating or duplicating the feat.

This annual spectacle draws a lot of enthusiasts and from the economic standpoint it pumps in considerable revenues to the Louisville economy. From hotel rooms, to dining areas and resorts, facilities are all fully booked for the two-week event.

So, if you have the resources come and join in the festivities. This is a one time event you must never miss. See you at the races.

My father like most belonging to the "baby boomers generation" is resilient, honest, hardworking and the "jack of all trades" sort of individual. During weekends when he was younger, you see him attending to periodic repairs of the roof, or changing panels on the eaves, or replacing worn-out vinyl tiles on the dining area. He is also very handy with power tools, to the point that he would use a chain saw to prune a tree at the back and I even witness him trying his hand at a pneumatic jack hammer to level off a concrete wall to accommodate a new house extension.

I know that his passion lies in cars. Even if we are not that well off, he always manages to change cars once every two years and when we drive down the freeway in a new car you could sense his enthusiasm as he feels the power and the roar of the engine. He could have been a Formula I racing champion if opportunity warrants, but events overtook him and instead ended up in France as part of the Allied Forces.

In a very rare occasion my job brought me to Indianapolis during the "Indianapolis 500 racing month," and it gave me the chance to be part of the over quarter of a million enthusiasts that flock to the city annually. Out of the revelry I remembered my father, so I brought home all sorts of memorabilia - flags, pennants, banners, pins and even the bottled drinks sold at the bleachers.

True enough when my father recognized the things I brought, he engaged me in a bear hug a rare thing since he never let his emotion betray him. Maybe because the day I gave my present was on "Fathers Day 2008."

Of late Las Vegas has been chosen as the venue for most title fights in boxing, although some still look on Madison Square Garden in New York because maybe of the memories of countless Muhammad Ali fights. Promoters like Bob Arum or Oscar de la Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions almost always have their large fights staged at the gambling capital of the United States.

One of my trips to the city coincided with a big fight - the third Morales versus Pacquiao fight and it generated so much media mileage that I joined the throng of boxing enthusiasts to the fight venue. True to my observation the spectators were mostly supporters of the protagonists, both pro Mexican and Filipinos alike. This is evident by the thousands of country mini flags waved by the crowd.

When both fighters entered the ring and were officially announced, country flags were at the center ring as the National Anthem of the US, Mexico and the Philippines were sang. Each country had singers and at the end of the Anthem the atmosphere at the venue is already fever pitch and everybody was anticipating a good fight.

So, when the bell signaling the start of the bout sounded everybody was on edge as each boxer delivered devastating punches. Midway through the third round Pacquiao connected with a series of combinations that sent Morales reeling and from then on pandemonium broke loose. And before you know it the fight was stopped and the winner raises both his fists, a TKO.

Again, the Philippine flag was displayed and carried around the ring, announcing to the world the success of the Filipino pugilist for now.

Once when I was in Makati, that is one of the cities in the Philippines - stayed there for over a year as head of the marketing arm of an American company that sells printers and other computer accessories. We normally start working at 10am and take our lunch at a McDonald's outlet nearby usually at half past noon.

On this particular day I was late for lunch but what caught my attention was the place was extra festive with balloons, buntings and pennants that announce Mother's Day. I felt ashamed of myself I totally forgot my mother way back home in Nevada.

I settled in a corner beside three nuns talking happily about their day out and reprieve from religious duties. Then a boy maybe around four years old came inside, a mendicant from his looks and asked the guard for a McDonald's "happy mother's day" flag, but the guard shove him away. Still he stayed just outside hoping that one of the customers might grant his request.

Out of the blue the nuns called and asked what he wanted, and from what I understood he was only asking for a McDonald's flag that he could give his mother on this special day. The nuns ordered a big Mac burger for him and his mom and spaghetti for his younger sister since the three of them ply the streets for alms after their father left some months ago.

This is a most engaging lesson in life for me, that there is really no distinction, rich or poor you will do something to keep your mother happy.

So, once back in the office I immediately called my mom. At three o'clock in the morning in Nevada? Sounds crazy, but worth it.

Suddenly it's the fourth of July, and it means holidays, parades and of course outdoor BBQ Parties. This is the time of the year that we show our patriotic zeal and join the celebrations to savor the fruit of our struggles to attain the degree of freedom that we want. Parties abounds decorated with anything patriotic, free food and lots of drinks. This is your day to unwind from immersion to your job, to your loves, to your boss and let loose, enjoy the moment.

Of course the fourth of July would not be complete without a regatta of American flags that dominates the atmosphere in any celebration.

Everybody would be out for a good time, but like any Dick and Johnny we have to abide to simple reminders for our conduct during this special occasion. Always remember not to break any law, so you can party till the wee hours - 3am.

Like any party in the works, food is really very important. Since most parties will be conducted outdoors, the most popular food will be BBQ. Prepare extra servings, unexpected guests might come in and always be on hand to offer the most enticing desserts.

To enliven and project a festive atmosphere always decorates your place. Use a hefty amount of the patriotic colors - red, white and blue. Better if you can provide flags, banners and pennants to serve as souvenirs as your guests leave.

And lastly, whether you are a guest or the host, you must thoroughly enjoy the party. Have fun, why have the party in the first place if you can't have fun.

Remember the fourth of July comes only once a year, so make the most of it.

I chanced upon an interesting game on the Internet that is about identifying the different flags of the countries of the world. As each flag is shown you are to give an answer, also you will be guided by a series of clues about the important attributes of the country that fly this particular flag. Naturally I was hooked and started the process.

I opted for 20 world flags and to really test my mettle, I've decided to forego using the clues and identified the flags pointblank. At the end of the game, I was only able to name seven of the 20 and that includes the flag of Canada and Mexico who happen to be across the border neighbors; the United Kingdom because I visited the place twice; Australia because the Sydney Opera fascinates me; Japan because I associate it with
Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Malaysia because of the Petronas Tower; and the Philippines because I have some friends that I chat occasionally.

The result already made me happy at least even if I am not a vacation buff my memory still gave me an honorable rating. But, then my daughter who is a fourth grader entered the picture and did the quiz all over again and the result, she identified 18 of the 20 flags shown to her. Imagine my consternation having been beaten soundly by a fourth grader. I am not in the league of my own daughter, not even near.

Well to ease my disappointment, I have to think that maybe I'm just getting old and my memory have started to take its toll from the long hours at work and maybe a lot of maybes - given proper preparation, I could have performed better.

Golf news is almost sounding like my Nanny in grade school, who provides comfort while in school, prepares snacks, rides with me on the school bus and protects me like an angry hen. This analogy is appropriate since golf does not only broadcast news and recent happening but also the minutest details like collecting golf flags, the love life of participants and health scores of the front running golf icons. Can you see the point of similarities?

I had the chance to browse the Internet on items like golf flags memorabilia and to my amazement this single piece of information gave me an in-depth appraisal of this broadening business opportunity. As a tournament comes to a close golf flags used during the tourney are sold to enthusiasts, these flags are then kept for safekeeping or displayed as memorabilia.

With the coming of the Internet queries are posted on the web about possible golf flags covering specific tourneys and years, particularly if a known player won the said event. You can actually sell your flags online and depending on the antiquity and availability of the item, prices will naturally vary.

Just for kicks, a 2004 Masters flags auctioned online would fetch a price of over a hundred dollars, a lot of times over the acquisition price of a few pennies back then. More would be the asking price of the souvenir flag if it has an authentic signature of the winner of the tournament covering the particular year.

Most popular flags memorabilia now in demand are those signed by Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples to name a few, but not Tiger Woods because of his dominant winning ways he has become redundant.

Once I attended a seminar on cure and prevention of prostate cancer, a malignant disease that affects one in every six Americans. I found out that it is curable when diagnosed early on because a variety of treatment can be applied to prevent the spread to other organs of the body. What is really needed is an effective information campaign particularly on the symptoms once it manifests so one can immediately visit special centers for treatment.

On my way to the seminar, I saw a series of awareness banners not only outside but also inside the seminar venue. The flags were so simple, not even a word was printed on it except for a simple diagram of a ribbon in plain light blue. True to my analysis, this is a message for our fight against prostate cancer. The presence of these in strategic places will give us the impetus to be really cognizant of the fact that it exists within our midst.

Also during the seminar, participants were given pins, a diagram of a light blue ribbon which we were asked to wear to keep other people informed of the importance of submitting to medical check-ups to prevent unnecessary sufferings or even death.

There are other awareness flags that are posted on the street poles, on entrance canopies and even on blank walls, simply to remind us of the necessity.

In one of my trips to the supermarket, I saw to my amazement that a diabetes awareness flag stares at me and suddenly I feel the urge to bring my children for screening. Having been aware that diabetes not only affects the adults but the children as well.

Why do charter boat owners prefer to register their vessels outside of the United States and fly a different flag? Take note that when your vessel is registered in the US, you become subject to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) stringent regulations as mandated by the Jones Act of 1916 - an act so outdated and was used previously during the era of the robber barons.

This is not to conclude that we have far better regulations than the rest, but the fact is some have far more stringent regulations than the US. Thus abiding with the existing USCG regulations and restrictions are really expense laden for boat owners to maintain.

Where do boat owners usually register and pay their annual fees? There are only three possible locations that boat owners go for their annual registrations. One is the Cayman Islands the berthing area for most large boat charter corporations, the second is the British Virgin Islands and the third is St. Vincent. So even if you are an American, since your charter boat is registered elsewhere, you are considered a visiting charter boat operator because of the different boat flag you are using.

What boat regulation will then apply? This is totally unwise because only the regulation and restriction of your home base can be used against you, not the area where you operate. So, in this connection a move is being made worldwide for a uniform standard of safety regulation and restriction that port official can apply to all charter boat owners, regardless of what flag they fly. This will now streamline port operations, as everybody will only have a single act to follow.

If this move materializes, then the European SOLAS standards will most likely be adapted for this project.

Why the Philippines? The Philippines is a staunch ally of the United States in the Far East, in fact it was the Americans who liberated it from the Spanish conquistadors in the 18th century. So, it was basically an American colony, until the country was granted independence by the American Congress right after the Second World War.

The first Commonwealth government of the Philippines has legislated that Independence Day rites for the Islands must fall on the 4th of July to coincide with the American celebration. But it was moved during the 60's to June 12th to commemorate the declaration of the first republic. And July 12 is now celebrated as American Friendship Day, a fitting tribute to the American influence that pervades local society even to this day.

Even before the Americans came to the Islands, the Philippines had already an existing flag. It carries three basic colors, red, white and blue with a golden sun placed at the center of the white triangle and on each angle is added three stars representing the three distinct island groupings - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

During the sojourn of the Americans to the country, the Philippine Flag flew side by side with the American tricolor. Due to the American influence, the country is literate as everybody read and write, understands English while a large majority can speak fluently making it the second language.

General Douglas McArthur together with his aide-de-camp Colonel Dwight Eisenhower came to the Philippines to help in the development of the Philippines. Later when the 2nd World War broke out, General McArthur left only after the famous assurance "I shall return" was made, and return he did with a bang.

The American flag has been with us for 231 years and it has stood as an emblem for freedom, justice, equality, human rights for areas where it has flown. It is only appropriate that we bestow honor to the flag and ideals it serve and for 2008, the Flag Day is June 14th. And by Presidential Proclamation, the week where the Flag Day is observed is automatically declared as the National Flag Week.

Why and how do we celebrate the National Flag Day? On this special day, we as a nation remember those in uniform who gave their all, courage and sacrifice to inspire each and every one of us. Also we try to remember the rich history of our oldest national symbol and ponder on our duty and latent responsibility to carry on the tradition of freedom well into the future. It is on Flag Day that parades and celebrations are made, flags are displayed on all Federal Government buildings to honor our national symbol.

How did the flag come to be? The stars and stripes as the flag is known originated as a result of a resolution adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777 which described the flag to have thirteen alternate red and white stripes; that the union be made out of thirteen stars; and white in a blue field that suggests a new constellation.

When the flag was flown over Fort McHenry in 1814, it inspired Scott Key believing that liberty would finally triumph and wrote the tenets of the National Anthem. Moving words that still energizes and emboldens the American spirit as we face the challenges of a new era.

We have been too preoccupied with our interpretation of the American flag that we have failed to look more closely on the symbolism attached to our neighbors flag, Mexico. This is really important because Mexico is just across the border and besides most of our migrant residents is part of the vibrant Mexican-Latino community.

Are you aware that Mexico has adopted three colors for their flag? Much like our own flag with red, white and blue, Mexico's flag carries a vertical color combination of red, white and green with the national coat of arms placed strategically at the center of the white stripe. This national tricolor has been officially adapted since 1968, but this overall design has been in use since 1821, when the national emblem was first created.

What does the color symbolize? The original interpretation of the Mexican tricolor is; that green symbolizes the country's independence from Spain, or during the country's war and struggle for independence; white stands for the country's religion - the Roman Catholic faith; and red represents the union of all the people of the world, Europeans and Americans included.

However since the secularization of Mexico which was spearheaded by its President Benito Juarez during the latter part of the 20th century, the color symbolism has radically changed. Green now signifies hope; white is for the unity of the people of Mexico; and red represents the blood shed by the national heroes of Mexico.

So, having known what the Mexican flag symbolizes, are you also adept on what the American flag stands for, particularly the stars and stripes?

Have you ever wondered how the diplomatic corps manage to stick car flags into their vehicles? Not only are these car flags installed within short notice, but also flags cling to their vehicles even at speeds of over 100mph.

Of course we cannot expect our diplomats to drill holes on their cars every time they are requested to don car flags, it will be too demanding, besides cars will be riddled with bolts and screw holes. Since car flags are installed only for the duration of the motorcade and later removed, the use of bolts and nuts to hold the flag will be time consuming and at the same time mar the glossy finish of the car surface.

The most practical solution will be to use chemical based adhesives, but then again it leaves a residue that could not be cleaned and at the same time affect the car finish. Some enterprising flag makers use flags with a pole that is provided with a vacuum attachment. This form of attachment is only effective for some time, because even if it provides perfect adhesion to the surface, the vacuum adhesion loses its grip after some time. For our cars that are constructed of aluminum or reinforced plastic and even carbon, this seems to be the only way.

But for cars that are made of steel, then a magnetically adhesive car flagpole is the answer. You can actually stick you car flag anywhere so long as the surface is of steel and your problem of a reliable adhesion is solved.

Europe being soccer crazy, each individual who goes to games are always equipped with car flags. They cannot go without the car flags waving in front or at the back of their cars, thus a magnetically adhesive car flag has been devised for the purpose.

I recently read an article of a student in the United Kingdom where he was ordered to take out the flag displayed because it smacks of racists undertones. There were other precedents where individuals were ordered by the police to do the same act. Since when does showing a patriotic symbol as being racist in context? Probably the persons involved were just showing patriotic zeal and not something else.

UK is like the USA where migrants gather in search of better opportunities and with it several cultures naturally co-exist. But certainly displaying a host country's flag is only patriotic and not as otherwise claimed.

In the US, the display of flags is not limited to public and government buildings, but private individuals themselves have it on their residences, their offices and in gatherings. The passion for these flag is very evident in the populace. We never consider displaying a host country's flag as a crime, nor does a migrant's country's flag as such.

We respect each migrant passion for his culture. Take the case of the Latinos in the US, they are free to display whatever forms of cultural symbols, speak their local dialect so long as it does not violate local statutes.

The Chinese, the Japanese, the Arabs and other expatriates now permanent residents in the USA have their different cultures showcased in different cultural presentations, yet we allow them simply because freedom of expression is guaranteed by our constitution.

We tolerate our migrants display of veneration to their emblems, why not us Americans, go ahead then display our flag, no law has been legislated to prohibit one from doing his patriotic duty.

Los Angeles is seriously considering its bid to host the 2016 Olympic games for the third time, that is if the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) will allow it. Actually the toss-up is a choice between Los Angeles and Chicago. Thus, the city found to have the most amenities for the games will be given the green light to host the summer spectacle.

The scheduled visit of the USOC to Los Angeles has been greeted with Olympic street pole banners that lined the Sunset Boulevard on the north strip of the UCLA campus. Many who saw the exhibit of street pole banners are one in the opinion that it really is worth it. Some were dismayed that they failed to visit Sunset Blvd on the week the Olympic banners have been on the street. This is reminiscent of the banner show in 1984.

What were the USOC looking for? Of course they were very critical on the sports venues; the housing facilities that will be home to the participants; the hotels and other amenities for the guests and tourists that will flock to the city; the traffic condition so movement of guests and participants will not be hampered and the crime rate of the city. These are all to be considered in order for a city to successfully stage a gathering of this magnitude.

What will be L.A.'s main setback? As in any dense urban center, traffic will be the sword of Damocles hanging over L.A.'s bid. However the rejuvenation of the city's thoroughfares had been ongoing, particularly 405 and 5 that is now being widened to ease traffic congestion. Three new rail lines are to be added that will double our transit option in 2016.

L.A. should be ready in 2016.

Do you know that Canada despite its stature as a nation only had a symbol etched into the Canadian consciousness only on February 15, 1965, that makes it 43 years old today? Yes, it may be hard to decipher why, but that is the truth. The first sighting of the Canadian flag was made on the appointed day, the red and white maple leaf made its rise into history as it flew over Parliament Hill, and everyday henceforth.

Why and how was the flag developed? The flag has transformed all barriers and united Canada today, but 43 years ago it caused a rift between families, the various ethnic groups and even the political parties. Credit should go to Judge John Matheson, a liberal Member of Parliament who headed the committee that eventually drafted the flag design in 1964. The Prime Minister then Lester B. Pearson favored the design involving three red maple leaf with three vertical blue stripes on either side.

In the end, the preferred design of the Conservatives - the British flavored Red Ensign which also served as the flag under which the Canadian soldiers fought during the second World War, was finally adapted as the official national emblem. Despite furious debate on the issue of flag design, the motion was passed on December 15, 1964 and subsequently approved by the Queen and the Maple Leaf was finally hoisted over Parliament Hill.

True to its purpose the flag united the people of Canada, it flew over the graves of soldiers who gave their lives in World War II and it makes you feel proud as a citizen and humbled over the experience of having the symbol in our midst.

I am amused to see different cultural shows staged by different expatriate communities around the United States of America. Rightfully so, because almost all nationalities around the globe have made the USA their second home, but has continued to practice their native customs and traditions despite being in a foreign land.

Take the case of the Latinos in America, they have been in the mainstream society for quite some time, but their native Spanish language have continued to proliferate. To the point that when you are in a pre-dominantly Spanish settlement you feel as if you are in a foreign country. They talk in Spanish, their establishment are adorned with their country flag thereby giving the place local color and ambience.

Also try dining in a Chinese restaurant, probably in the heart of the Chinese community and you will have difficulty threshing out what food to order because everybody talks in their native mandarin language. You must always bring with you a guide that knows the Chinese culture in order for you to enjoy the meals served.

Just the other day I saw in local TV a presentation staged by the Filipino community on the streets of New York City. All the participants are in their native costumes dancing to the tune of pre-dominantly Filipino cultural music. The atmosphere was festive because of the large Philippine flag that was auspiciously displayed during the show. Most of the spectators sport mini Philippine flag as they listen to the artists performing on the makeshift stage. I understand that the affair was made to coincide with the Philippine Independence Day celebration.

Still there are others who have made their presence felt, particularly the Japanese who have been our economic partners for over five decades.

The United States of America is a melting pot for migrants out for a better life. We have become a nation endowed with a grouping of population coming from different countries and cultures. You name the nationalities and most likely we have them in our midst - we have the Africans, the Arabs, the Asians and new arrivals from Europe. No wonder then that we see a lot of foreign flags displayed by expatriates in their residences, their offices and particularly on special events.

Since these symbols are already here with us, it is therefore appropriate that we take a second look at our migrants country flag. For instance the Australia flag, it has a grouping of stars that ably corresponds to the Southern Cross and a union jack at the upper left hand corner. This simply stands for their historical attachment to Great Britain.

The India flag was designed following a pattern of spiritual and religious symbolism. Saffron signifies courage, ultimate sacrifice and renunciation of the spirit; the white at the center is light to guide the path to truth and conduct while also symbolizing unity, peace and purity; green meanwhile is for fertility and prosperity of the land; chakra is the symbol for law and progress; and the twenty four spokes wheel represents the dynamics of peaceful change 24 hours a day.

The flag of Japan has a red circle at the center, and it represents the rising sun. But what does it represent today? Or some other foreign flags that uses the crescent as a symbol, what does it represent? Oddly enough, we will never know what these symbols represent until we sit down and study its significance.

Do you know your country flag? What does it stand for? All countries around the world have riveting tales about their flags and the colors that was specifically chosen to visually reflect the true meaning of the flags.

What about the United States of America flag, what does it stand for? Well, if you come from an impoverished country ruled by a tyrant, then the American flag can only mean freedom - freedom from oppression, from want, injustice and equality. That is how foreigners view our flag and as the bastion of democracy we have the moral obligation to help those suffering from all forms of aggression to relieve them of their ordeal.

As a citizen, the American flag with the 50 stars represent the current 50 states of the union and the 13 stripes are for the 13 original states that rebelled against Britain and became the initial member of the union. But why are the stripes red or the stars white and why blue when any color can do. Some historians pointed out that red is for bravery and this is appropriate since we shed a lot of blood to get to where we stand today. Obviously, blue represents sovereignty or our desire as a nation to be independent and the right for self-governance.

One of the poignant memories that I can associate with our flag is the raising of the American tricolor at Iwo Jima at Mount Sirubachi by American soldiers and of course it gave me goose bumps to see the American flag being planted by astronauts on the surface of the moon.

Does Illinois have a state flag? Yes officially that is, but the creation of the Illinois state flag came very late in its history. How? Illinois became a state of the union in 1818, yet it was only in 1915 or 100 years later that its official state symbol was realized. And credit should be given to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their effort in the making of the state flag.

A meeting was held in 1915 in Washington D.C. among the national chapters of the DAR, and each state had been represented alongside their state flags. On her part Ella Park Lawrence, a resident of Galesburg, Illinois the official representative to the national convention found out to her dismay that Illinois does not have an official state flag. Thus the frantic move to create the state flag of Illinois was put into motion.

With a 25 dollar price a statewide search for the winning design was relayed to all DAR chapters across Illinois. The entry from Rockford Center won, designed by Lucy Derwent based on the state's official seal.

The official state flag had a white background and a bald eagle perched on a gray rock with dates 1818 and 1868 written across it. 1818 represents the year Illinois was admitted into the union, while 1868 was the year the official state seal was adopted. The beak of the bald eagle holds a red ribbon with the State Motto, "State sovereignty, national union" and a red, white and blue shield was added tilted against the rock. It is actually an ape of the national flag with 13 stripes and 13 stars.

Then in 1970 the word Illinois in blue was added to the state flag.

I found this article about Williamsburg playing host to an extended display of historical flags captured by the British Forces in 1779 during the revolutionary war some 255 years ago. Actually these are four flags taken as trophies during the war, but was well preserved and has staged a homecoming particularly at the museums in colonial Williamsburg.

Story has it that these set of flags were kept by the family of notorious British cavalry leader Banestre Tarleton where it remained hidden for over two centuries until it was auctioned off late last year and sold to a private owner. The revolutionary flags on display are aptly named "Captured Colors: Four Battle Flags of the American Revolution", in exhibit alongside revolutionary war-era firearms and
cavalry swords.

What makes this exhibit extra special is it proves beyond doubt the true existence and use of these flags as torch during one of the phases of our evolution as a nation. This is piece of history and everybody must have the chance to see it, whether in Williamsburg or the relic will have to be toured around the United States.

This is a testament to the struggles of our founding fathers, the hardship that they have to hurdle to build a nation. Likewise, it becomes necessary for us to examine and ponder on our glorious history and how it molded us to be the catharsis of freedom around the world.

For our flag manufacturers, this relic would serve to enlighten them that flags would remain forever, that they must strive to duplicate the feat of historical significance.

Even before the union of independent states was consummated and became the United States of America (USA), each of the participating states had already an existing state flag? Yes, that is precisely true and the creation of the Stars Spangled Banner superseded all state flags and was adopted as the official national flag. Thus when flags are displayed, the state flags are placed lower than the national tricolor.

In the case of Alaska, the state flag was a product of a statewide contest among grade seven to twelve students in 1926. The winning entry was designed by a thirteen year old - Benny Benson. The design was actually a composition of eight gold stars on a blue background, it represents the Big Dipper and the more visible North Star. And in 1927 the State of Alaska legislators adopted the design as the official flag of the territory of Alaska. Likewise later the framers of the Alaska constitution also placed their stamp of approval making it the official flag of the State of Alaska.

To complete the patriotic symbol of the people of Alaska, Marie Drake a long time employee of the Department of Education penned the lyrics of the "Alaska's Flag" which first appeared as a poem in 1935. It was Elinor Dusenbury wife of the commander of Chilkoot Barracks at Haines from 1933 to 1936 who composed the melody for the "Alaska's Flag". The inclusion of "Alaska's Flag" as the official song of the territory was made by the legislature in 1955.

Alaska officially joined the union and became one of the states of the United States in 1959.

Tradition has it that since 1948, Memorial Day has always been celebrated to honor our beloved soldiers who died for our commitment to freedom and to maintain world semblance of peace. This is the special day and we usually mark it with prayers to our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice of dying for our country. Yes, this is a testament for such deed. Have we done enough to deserve their passing? Or am I "worth dying for", a poignant message delivered by Eleanor Roosevelt to the countless thousands who braved all odds to protect our civil liberties, human dignity and human rights. Are we?

In the recently concluded May 2008, Memorial Day Weekend, soldiers planted thousands of US mini flags to each of the over 265,000 soldiers laid to rest at the Arlington Memorial cemetery. This is a gesture cherished by Americans, to honor those fallen heroes who served our country. I know this is not enough salutation to our soldiers, but to remember them on this special day is a tribute to their heroism and raw courage to uphold the ideals our founding fathers fought for and we as beneficiaries enjoyed.

Some of us trooped also to the Arlington Memorial grounds carrying flowers and offered prayers to those tombs not visited by relatives, because not everyone could be expected to visit their loved ones on this day. Well, this is just their way of saying thanks to those who gave their lives so we can continue to live, the way we envision life to be.

Have you done your deed today?

Why green? It has to be green because the Boston Celtics is once again on the championship run. Although green symbolizes the environment, do not try to associate it with most events about the ecology - green for once represents the Boston Celtics. The city is now abuzz with the impending drive to take Boston Celtics 17th championship in the NBA. The Boston Garden is likewise adorned with green, from banners to streamers and even pennants, to provide a festive atmosphere to those
who will be watching the game unravel, live.

As if the green ornaments have blossomed overnight, like mushrooms have invaded the metropolis as well. Most inhabitants have purchased car flags with the Boston Celtics emblem in support of the basketball franchise. Never have the desire to show its population's support to a favorite team have been as recently shown by its inhabitants. Car flags have become a treat in Boston as almost all of the entire New England communities have joined the bandwagon, thus the city now teems with green.

Also try taking your coffee at the different diners and local watering holes the conversation will absolutely be about the Boston Celtics. How the franchise will eventually dominate the championship game is the hot topic for group conversations and even the print media, the radio and TV as well have joined the fray with most of their topics centered about the event.

Will the Boston Celtics win in the end? If you are an avid fan, the answer will obviously be yes. But for regular Johnny's like you and me, your guess will be good as mine.

Try going inside the Boston Garden at any given day and you will notice auspiciously displayed at the rafter countless banners. This is the home of the Boston Celtics, one of the most gloried basketball franchises in the history of the NBA. Some are banners the Celtics won as Eastern Conference Champions, but what keeps you on your toes are the 16 NBA championship banners, the most in any basketball team. And if they are on a roll now, a 17th championship banner will be added.

You heard me right the Celtics are poised to take the coming NBA championship. Yes with the troika of Garnett, Pierce and Allen, the big three of the Celtics, they could give the franchise its 17th NBA championship after 21 years of so-so performances.

Championship custom flags in the NBA are priceless possessions, since only a few franchises are blessed with one, how much more with 16 different banners for 16 championship runs. The Boston Celtics have previously dominated the sports and are once again on the verge of repeating the feat and extending their championship streak.

Fans of the ball club are in fever pitch as they prepare for the championship, they have trekked in droves to the Boston Garden to see their Celtics eliminate pretenders to the throne. The more is expected of them now since the championship trophy is at hand. The Celtics is hosting the first two games of the championship, and at the rate the games are played they could get the prized championship in the coming days.

What about you, are you a Boston Celtics fan?

If you travel frequently, then at significant days you might have noticed the different types of banners that crown the main boulevard from the airport to the city's central business district. This is true if a convention is fast approaching, particularly if it involves a gathering that is national in coverage. It could be a convention of all the fire marshals, maybe the American Dental Association or an expected large crowd because an international star is having a concert. The presence of these banners is the natural advertising medium used by the sponsors of the event.

So, if you come in as a guest and need to know the venue of the event, it will no longer be a problem, because all you have to do is just follow the trail of banners. Right after you alight from the plane, the banners will directly guide you to the convention or concert site. It's as easy as that, no frills, no bloodhound that need the scent to keep you on the right track.

Normally, sponsors of an event will post these banners days before the first guest arrives. To avoid confusion tickets or primer for the event have the same distinguishing logo's or symbols with the banners, so guests will just have to pick the right banner trail. You don't even have to ask to local transit service for direction, the banners will do it for you.

The convenience offered by these street banners is of paramount importance, particularly to those first time visitors to the place. Besides, banners gives an impression that a festival is ongoing.

All the countries in the world have their own National flag and each citizen knows the effort and struggles of their founding fathers to gravitate towards this symbol. That is why, in the headquarters of the United Nations all of these nations are represented by their flags . Nowhere else can be found the grouping of these more evident than in the hallowed grounds of the UN.

Looking at this poignant landscape and the flags that stood side by side, we start to wonder how the flags came to be. Did each country brought from home and submitted their own flags? Or, are these flags ordered and made by our flag manufacturers in the United States? Your guess is as good as mine, but we cannot discount the possibility that most of these flags are made in this country, since visually they are of the same size and the fabric used are almost identical.

Yes, it is possible for after all our flag manufacturers are meticulous in the flag making process. Take the case of NorthStar Flags and Poles, they had the best equipment this side of the world, particularly in the printing process since they can reproduce over 8,000 color shades. This is important because they have to reproduce the exact color replica of a country flag. Also their graphic department can copy in detail whatever form and shape required of them. This is actually an assurance to countries that in the United States their precious national color will be handled with reverence.

You, our beloved foreign diplomats won't be sorry if you order your country flags from us, besides quality and durability, we deliver promptly.

It is quite a reflection of a leader that the ideals he fought for has literally catapulted his country to world fame. From John F. Kennedy of the United States, to Gandhi of India, to Charles de Gaulle of France, to Margaret Thatcher of England and a special mention must be made on Mikhael Gorbachev of the old USSR. These are just a few of the world leaders who made a difference to world outlook whether politically, environmentally and the uplift of human dignity. They being prime movers of society had somehow gave vent to world opinion, thus giving due recognition to their country and flag.

Yes it is clearly apparent that when a country becomes famous its national color would follow suit. Who would forget the American Flag after what we did to help support democracy and human rights, or the flag of India after Gandhi staged the famous stand for a non-violent struggle and silent protest. Or who would not be overwhelmed when Gorbachev literally doused the flame of the cold war and a new Russia and its flag rose from the ashes.

This reference to world events had brought us closer together, like a family of nations as evidenced by the almost two hundred country flags that stand as mute witness to the struggle of the United Nation to unify us. We really have gone a long way; wars have been stopped; total disarmaments is on the drawing board; the world is finally waking-up to the effects of global warming; we are trying to scale down global poverty; and in the future attain lasting world peace.

When street pole banners are properly designed with matching colors to wit, a series of this in a major thoroughfare is indeed a sight to behold. But, have you ever wondered how they are mounted on the street poles? I know like most of us, we only have our eyes on the banner and not on the accessories that hold the pole banner together because we reason out that these concerns are only for technically trained people.

On closer inspection though, a street pole banner is devised with a fiberglass pole on the top and bottom of the banner. The main purpose is to stretch the banner so it can be visually appealing, while the pole is of fiberglass because it can only flex and not break when the banner is subjected to strong winds. Now, to hold the poles proper practice uses a pair of forged aluminum base that is held by stainless steel rings and secured by galvanized steel pins.

When mounting a street pole banner , the fiberglass pole is inserted to the top base and held by a pin, then with the use of the stainless steel ring that literally hug the street pole holds the assembly thoroughly steady and secured. The same thing is done with the lower aluminum base, holding the banner taut and sturdy. This should guide banner buyers, but just by looking at the hardware there is no guarantee that you are buying the most durable.

So, when faced with this dilemma it is best that you buy from a reliable flag manufacturer. And on top of your list must be NorthStar Flags and Poles, the most trusted company in the industry.

by: The Flagman

Buying a good, quality wise flag is one thing and the accessory that goes with it is another thing. You see, most buyers only look at the flag and seeing that it meets their taste, buy it without even checking the additional stuff that goes with it. One must be meticulous in their purchase because a flag is good only when its accessory is also good, one must complement the other. The same way with a chain, it is only as good as its link, or a pilot can only be competent if he is on a very reliable plane.

To your bad luck, when you reach home and starts to install your flag you found out that it lacks proper installation hardware so it could last when mounted. This is the usual complaints that are aired by consumers, particularly when flags are to be displayed indefinitely it must be thoroughly secured to resist extra strong winds, snow, frost and erratic temperature patterns. The accessories must last longer than the flag or both can have similar life spans, not one rotting ahead of the other.

If the flag and accessory could only talk, then you will hear one say "you cannot die on me bro", which normally happens when one outlives the other. Take the case of a flag that is wall mounted, the wall bracket must be sturdy enough to hold the flag and pole and provided with at least a pair of screws or anchor bolts to hold the assembly together.

Next time to avoid a most uncalled for predicament, always get your flags and flag accessories from reputable flag manufacturers.

The popularity of golf as a sport transcends all known barriers, whether you are rich or poor, Caucasian or Asian. Not everybody will be good at golf, but anybody can become a golfing enthusiast. You could be one in the crowd that follow the tournament in golf courses or simply see the coverage on TV's. One thing is sure though, golf has attracted millions of followers around the world.

Business as well had its share in the continued popularity of golf as a sport. Ask any businessman for the potential of sponsoring golf tournaments? The answer would obviously be "that it is good for the business," due to the media exposure that is probably worldwide in scope. How would it be if your product is seen advertised in Canada, in Tokyo or even far-off Sydney? Your product would attain instant global following and it would not be hard for your sales representative to market your products in these locations.

And how would you successfully market your products? Simply by using custom made golf flags that will add color to the golf course, particularly those emblazoned with your company logo, company slogan maybe or messages that will help promote your products. So, every time a camera swoops down on the playing field, your golf flag would literally dazzle those partaking the coverage on their TV's.

Once you sponsor a golf tournament, it means capital spent, so select a flag manufacturer that can do justice to your flag and intended audience. Not just somebody, get the best.

Better yet, come to us NorthStar Flag and Pole, our integrity and reputation is beyond measure.

Of all the flags and banners devised for promotional use, I am more amused by the physical aspect of the twirler flag. Though this concept is new to the advertising field it has somehow created a niche for itself having surpassed other forms due to its unique character. From the point of view of advertising executives twirler flags provides the most effective visual presentation of an advertising medium.

Just what is a twirler flag and what makes it different from the rest? Well, the most important quality of a twirler flag is it rotates 360 degrees when mounted outside. When your promotional flag rotates this much, it gives your product ad maximum visual exposure, particularly since logo's and messages are printed on both sides. This really is a plus factor for your advertising requirement.

Also twirler flags are designed with a perimeter frame, some in the form of a hook others tear drop, that stretch out the fabric showing the messages across it. So, even during windy conditions the flag will just rotate instead of flip over not affecting in any way the shape and form. Besides, twirler flags are made lightweight and sturdy making it the perfect partner in any advertising campaign.

I saw an array of this placed strategically in front of a Toyota car dealer's showroom and the effect is really stunning since the twirler flags are of different colors. The movement of the flags as they rotate makes an even vivid aesthetic composition.

Try a series of this in your business establishment and savor the increased client patronage. Then you will know that success will just be around the corner.

Anyway you look at it, golf is a very intimidating sport. Why? Because you are actually playing against yourself and if you are not physically or emotionally fit, the course will wear you down. But this type of sport has attracted a lot of enthusiasts to the point where a tournament becomes a media affair. If a tournament includes world known players in its list, then expect media to be like bees swarming the golf course. So, as the crowd of enthusiasts gather and follow their favorite players on the course hole after hole, expect TV cameras to swoop down on potential news stories. Yes, stories about golf had gained phenomenal access to television coverage, to newspapers and magazines making it a good vehicle for advertisement.

Expect giant multi-national companies to sponsor golf tournaments. Like Nissan or Toyota, McDonalds or Nike to sponsor golf tournaments, attracting among others big named golf stars to grace the tournament and the result is additional media mileage for their products. To enliven the atmosphere of the course, sponsors use custom golf flags that bear company logo's, slogan's and messages that are printed over it to mark holes, hazards, sand traps and water lagoons to inform players and the public.

Some golf flags even have messages announcing that a brand new car or maybe a vacation for two to Hawaii is at stake for an officially sanctioned hole-in-one by anyone of the tournament players. So, as each hole unfolds this is dutifully followed by the crowd and the TV crews for the lucky player to win the special prize.

Trade shows are venues where companies show their innovative edge against other competitive products. But what makes trade shows tick to the public are the presence of trade show banners that enlivens the atmosphere of the fair ground. It is therefore not only a competition among products, but also a race for flag manufacturers to devise the most striking banner in the show. Really, being in a trade show is a marvel in itself because flag manufacturers see to it that the public will be treated to a banner spectacle. The end result is a successful staging of the fair, particularly the cacophony of colorful trade show banners that heralds the success.

Trade shows then is also a venue for flag manufacturers to exploit their potential to the hilt. They must design their banners with the intention of providing the best and beat out the nearest competitor. As the products are pitted against each other, the same could also be said about flag manufacturers, because the most striking, durable and easily assembled banner will win out in the end. Companies will seek out their help the next time that trade shows are held and it will mean success for the flag manufacturer.

As had been our advocacy, we at NorthStar Flag and Pole will always give our best shot, whether the banner ordered from us is intended for trade fairs, for street poles and convention centers. We have the best graphic designers at our plants and probably the best equipment used in the flag manufacturing industry.

You will never go wrong, if you order your banners from us.

Whoever thought of trade shows must be complimented for an idea that has made strides to improve quality standards for our products. People who enter trade shows are fed with the desire to look more closely into the products and maybe inquire with company sales representatives about the durability of the product if it is a gadget or maybe get the information on the nutritional values if it is a food product. So, rather than examine the food labels at grocery stalls or read thoroughly the specifications, trade shows give you the opportunity to test and even taste the enhancing quality of the product.

In a trade show there will always be lots of companies out to show their wares, it is then important that exhibitors must have equal access to all consumers out to see the products that will appeal to them. Therefore trade show banners play a pivotal role in the success of a company competing against each other, particularly on related products. It is not enough that your product has the sound reputation among the many, you must duplicate it with a spectacular presence in a trade show. Trade show banners will do it for you.

Trade shows is a competition among the banners as well, the most fulfilling banners will naturally attract the most number of spectators and possible future consumers. So, always strive to get the best and order your banners at refutable manufacturers because the success of your business will depend a lot on the thorough exposure of your product to the buying public.

If you want the best, then come to us the NorthStar Flag and Pole for we can satisfy your quest.

Advertising executives had perfected the various ways of putting their products into the minds of consumers. For instance, the Japanese watch Seiko shoot to world prominence simply because they were chosen as the official timepiece during the Tokyo Olympics. Or if I remember right, Omega, the Swiss watch had also been used by American astronauts in one of the Apollo missions, and in the case of Nike, it has its various product endorsers. But, mind you these are all expensive and only large companies can afford to foot the bill of this type of advertising medium. So, what happens to the struggling SME's?

Well SME's are not yet global in scope, most probably they thrive in only a segment of the population or they serve only specific consumers, therefore they can use localized version of the advertising front. In new or opening establishments, they can use a series of flutter flags to get the required attention they needed. These are colorful flags usually with a logo and messages printed across it, and are usually mounted in front of the establishment. The presence of these flutter flags alone would be enough to draw the crowds in.

The cost may seem insignificant but just the same it is an added burden to the capital. So, make sure to order from the right sources in order to get the most attractive and durable flutter flag for your business. These flags are not only there for short periods of time, in most cases they stay put until the pole or the flag rots.

We at NorthStag Flags and Poles had been in flag manufacturing for quite some time and we can guarantee that our products are tested to be enduring and the best.
