Every country has its own share of customs and traditions when it comes to celebrating Christmas. In Italy, Christmas time lasts for three whole weeks, compared to most places where the holiday is celebrated for a mere single day. Oftentimes, Spaniards begin the celebration with a Novena.

The Novena is done eight days before Christmas Day. The practice has been done in the past several years. Music playing is also a common activity during Christmas and talk about the celebration as a family. The Novena involves several young people playing music together. They would sing Christmas carols in front of homes as well as share stories of the nativity. The musicians will usually be in costume, wearing Christmas colors or shepherds’ clothes. They would also receive money and other treats while singing at homes.

People get ready for Christmas in Spain during the Novena period. A lot of Christian houses like to feature their own version of the nativity scene. They would use a wide array of materials and use their creativity to present the birth of Jesus Christ. The usual characters would include shepherds, the wise men, farm animals, Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus inside a manger. Sometimes, there are competitions with winners getting a prize for coming up with the most creative nativity scene.

Romans celebrate Christmas at the Castel St. Agnelo by firing a cannon on Christmas Eve. People will initially fast and then dine together on Christmas Day. In Italy, people like to cook food like pasta as well as bake pastries for family and friends.
