In the olden days, the Spanish would celebrate the start of the winter months through the Hogueras. It is a very old custom that has been passed down from one generation to the next. The practice has been done before Christmas and the Spanish flag were known by the locals. The Spanish also like to do a fire leaping activity to celebrate the start of the winter season. In other parts of Europe, the Yuletide season and Saturnalia are celebrated. The Hogueras is done to keep people healthy in the new year, since it was a long-standing belief that jumping through fire cleanses the body and soul. The event is also done once a year like other pagan events.

In Spain, an ancient practice is done which is highly related to Catholicism. The Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the iconic characters of the Catholic Church. Many people like to start the Christmas season on December 8, which is the Immaculate Conception celebration. Many Catholic families prepare their own image of the Virgin Mary and set up an altar with other items on it like candles and flowers.

During Christmas Eve, a lot of people in Spain exchange presents and share stories. They are very religious so they like to go to church and attend mass. Afterwards, they share a bountiful meal together. They also like to share stories and sing songs in front of their homemade nativity scene. The scene would include items like a miniature bull and ladies doing laundry.
