Custom flags have been around  since 4000 years ago. In this era, flags were made from materials that would be able to withstand the ravages of the elements yet lightweight enough so that it is manageable for the person assigned to carry it around when the need arises. Thus, silk was the ideal material furnished for assembling a custom flag.

Today, we have a variety of materials that can easily be sourced out to use in the manufacture of custom flags. Materials that are commonly used for making flags are nylon, polyester, and cotton. Most popular of these three is Nylon which is similar to silk. It is also lightweight  that when a large flag will be fashioned from it, the weight is not burdensome. Being lightweight, it can easily sashay with the breeze. It is a durable material , therefore it can last long and can also be taken outdoors as it is able to  stand the onslaught of the elements and easily dries when it is soaked with water.

Polyester is also another material that is commonly used to fashion as a flag, though not as popular as nylon. Although polyester is more durable than nylon, it is not as light weight and economical. Polyester is ideal for harsher weather conditions and heavier winds. In these types of exposure, it is a wiser choice as it can lasts longer than nylon. When custom made into flags, polyester can woven or knitted.

Another material than can be used to make a flag is Cotton but not as popular as the first two mentioned. Its lesser popularity for use as flag is due to the fact that it is not as durable as nylon, polyester or silk. Cotton types of flags can be used outdoors although they are better off in indoors type of setting.
