The Mexican flag underwent a lot of changes throughout its recorded history. The first Mexican flag is a close replica to the national flag today but with a bit of a variation : the eagle wore a crown and was not clutching a serpent in its talons.

The first federal republic of Mexico started in 1823 and it was at this period that the second national flag was adopted. This second flag revealed a change in the coat of arms. The eagle was no longer wearing a crown. It was in this rendering that the eagle was clutching a serpent in its right talon. An oak branch and a laurel leaf were then added. The use of this flag was discontinued in 1864, during the dissolution of the federal republic.

The third national flag, which was never declared official, used the traditional green, white and red pattern which is also the colors used in the modern flag of Mexico today. The coat of arms is placed in the center, within the white stripe. The ratio of the flag’s length to the width was changed from 4:7 originally to 1:2. Four eagles with a crown of gold were placed in the 4 corners of the flag. This designed was ordered by the Emperor Maximillan in 1864 for a touch of French affectation. When Maximillan was overthrown and executed by the Mexican citizenry in 1867, this flag was abnegated.

It was in September 16,1968 that the current world Flag of Mexico was adopted. The eagle is now positioned from its front facing view to a side facing view. The hosting of Mexico City of the 1968 Summer Olympic Games may have prompted this change. Hence, the creation of this new Flag of Mexico, makes it the fourth official national flag.
