Ever wonder why sea going vessels have custom boat flags hoisted up on their masts? Since the dawn of the sailing world, these have become timeless symbols. Some images branded on these flags may invoke awe or amazement and on some, shivers and terror. The latter usually brought  on by a flag that features skulls and crossbones as seen on pirate ships. Such flag emblem  has come to be known as the Jolly Roger, a pirate flag associated to vessels manned by brigands.

What purposes do these flags serve? Maritime vessels , at present follow a certain flag signal code and this has come to be called as the International Maritime Flag Signal.  This system has been in use by sailors to be able to communicate to both sea and shore. Flags are therefore, communications tools.

Maritime or nautical flags come in various geometric shapes and colors and they convey a lot of meaning. In the beginning, the flag signal code included 17 symbols that can be combined to convey a thousand various messages. There flags that are raised when a ship enters or leaves a port or harbor. There are also flags used when sailing on areas outside borders. Today, this flag system of communication is used to spruce up a sea going vessel for certain ceremonies

Flags convey rank, which is termed as the flagship, often used and hoisted in headquarters. Different types of ship use or display flags specific to the kind of vessel they are. Example, a merchant ship that is on its way will expose a flag that will show what company they are. Organizations , clubs of boat owners or yacht owners have their own flags too, signifying affiliations. These fellowships have a practice of exchanging flags when they go about visiting each other’s turf especially when it is an initial visit.

Today, flags have become invaluable as ever. Custom boat flags not only convey a message , but they dress up a ship as well, as seen on every boating aficionado’s vessel. Sailing organizations have become popular at present that they take due diligence in the design of their custom flags. Such organizations would always want to make an impression, and what way of leaving an indelible memory but through their custom flags.
