Every June, one of the most powerful nations on earth rejoices what
seem to be the most prestigious and exclusively defined birthday
celebrations. With military flags and countless London flags raised
proudly on a typical sunny Saturday, the British celebrate the
Trooping the Color Parade. This event is held to commemorate the
birthday of the Queen Elizabeth, which was originally April 21, but
because weather conditions were more favorable during the summer, the
celebration of said event was moved to June, usually during the second
Saturday.
This ceremony is military in nature. Back in the 18th century where
the British was already a superpower, the birthday of the Queen was
marked with the presentation of the military strength of the nation by
passing the colors or military flags were passed along the troops to
be inspected and seen by the spectators and other dignitaries.
The event is marked by the pass in review of troops after the Queen is
greeted with a royal salute, followed by a band performing military
revelries, then by the passing of the colors and passing of the Foot
Guards, Household Cavalry, King’s Troop,  and Artillery. This is
immediately followed by the return of the Queen escorted by the Duke
of Edinburgh and other royalties back to Buckingham Palace before
finally taking a salute.
A tradition started with the time of King Edward VII to the present
time, this powerful military nation has shown the might and pride of a

sovereign that has stood by time as it unfolded in history.

One of the most prestigious and well known events that are more or
less exclusive to the British is the annual Trooping the Color parade.
Held annually, this spectacle offers a full street festivity which is
usually organized as in June. This specific event is mainly about the
commemoration and celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s birthday.
Of course, there is the parade of military personnel and marches past
the Household Troops on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. As these
troops march by with full pride and prestige, they carry with them the
colors – United Kingdom Flags, and various military flags.
The Queen, being the VIP of the said event and accompanied by the Duke
of Edinburgh rides in a coach, and revered by the throngs of people
and spectators rendering their respects to their sovereign. The
ceremony is seen with the coach where the queen is travelling at the
head of the troops and back to Buckingham Palace where finally the
Queen takes salutes from a dais.
Since the mid 18th century, this “official” birthday of the Queen has
been held and celebrated during the second Saturday of June.
Originally, the Queen’s birthday was on the 21st of April, but has
since then been moved to the current date because of more favorable
summer weather conditions, and has been the custom.
From the reign of King Edward VII until the present time, this
prestigious event with the processional parade, the inspection of the
military troops, and the passing of the military flags and other
regimental colors mark the proud and sovereign nation that stood the

test of time and history itself.

Tourists and British citizens gather each year during the start of June to celebrate the yearly Trooping the Color parade. The event showcases the birthday of the Queen and will feature a variety of parades and other exhibits. The Queen will be honored by the parades of the various regiments of the military as well as the Household Troops on Horse Guards. Whitehall will be full of military flags and United Kingdom flags on the special occasion.

The Queen will also be present in the parade inside a carriage with the Duke of Edinburgh seated beside her. The Queen will be saluted by the various soldiers and officers as she waves on top of the podium. The birthday of the Queen has been celebrated for several centuries. The official birthday was celebrated every second Saturday of June since 1748. Even though the Queen’s birthday is really on April 21, people traditionally celebrate it in the summer because of the better weather. Parades are better presented in fair weather.

The parade began in the 18th century and originated from the custom of the military of marching in front of the troops with a flag that will represent the particular section or regiment. The troops will be highly familiar with the colors so that they can easily recognize these during battle. The colors will define the specific regiment as well as the banners of the King or Queen. The parade consists of around 200 horses and 1400 officers. The flags will indicate the crest, title and slogan of the sector with its relative achievements.

The American Military flag features 175 streamers on the staff. All these stand for the different battles and
operations that the Army joined through the years. Every unit in the US army has its own version of the military flag,
complete with streamers that showcase the battles and experiences of the specific group. Every unit also presents its
own distinct flag which will be showcased under the Army flag.
The Marine Corps flag is scarlet with the corps emblem in the colors gold and gray. A white ribbon scroll can be
found underneath with “United States Marine Corps” stated. The guidelines and rules are quite similar to the Army.
The Navy flag of the United States features a dark blue background with the official white and gold seal of the
department. You will find a gold ribbon scroll over the seal with the words “United States Navy”. Some versions will
not include battle streamers.
The Navy flag is not usually featured in outdoor setups at naval stations or even in ships. It is generally featured
from a pole on the quarterdeck through ships in port. The US national flag is usually noticed on ships at sea. This is
placed on top of the main mast. In port, the national flag is usually featured at the rear portion of the ship. Ships in
port will feature a small flag or jack which is just the size of the blue part of the US flag. The jack is positioned on a
jackstaff and includes the thirteen white and red stripes. On top is the picture of a rattlesnake saying “Don’t Tread on
Me”.

used through President Harry Truman’s order in 1951. The flag has a very simple design, featuring the coat of arms
against a blue background. The rules on the banner and battle streamers are generally the same as the ones for the
Marine Corps and Army.

I have seen both small and large flags and flag poles all over the country. Different types of flags were featured and shown including military flags.
