“Alam” is an Arabic term for the faith flag. It means “signpost” or “standard”. Alam actually has a lot of cultural and historical importance among Islamic nations because these have been used by ancient tribes to represent their goals and aspirations. The battalions in the past carried these and the Alam is raised by the leader in the middle of a huge battle to encourage troops. The Alam, if raised on enemy grounds, means that they have achieved victory, regardless of whether there was actual combat or not.

After the Battle of Kerbala, the term “Alam” had another meaning. It was used to represent the Holy Banner of the grandson of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the holy prophet. Hussain was martyred together with 75 other close family members during the battle against Yazid. The battle was intended to bring back Islam to its original form. Over the centuries, the Alam faith flag was set up in the homes of loyalists and people who believed in Imam Hussain. These were also prepared in apartments referred to as Ashurkhanas or the Imam Baras. The flags were given great respect because it represented Hussain in his endeavors. The Alam may be given respect but it is not worshipped.

According to tradition, Abbas Alam bardar, the half-brother of Hussain was called the standard bearer during the Battle of Kerbala. He was martyred on the 10th of Muharram by the army of Yazid when he was getting water from the Euphrates River. Hussain took the banner and protected it even at the expense of his own life.
