Only a few flags can bring out feelings of patriotism as much as the Italian flag with its green, blue and white hues.
The Italian flag is often seen by many as a symbol of altruism and virtue. The green color represents hope, the red means charity and the white stands for faith. These are all principles of a pure and good human person. These are actually the traits that Italians aim to have throughout their lives.
The Italian flag was first seen during the Cisalpine Republic at Modena in 1797. The Italian Constitution was formed by the Austrian Hapsburgs. It was actually influenced by the French Constitution. Napoleon I controlled the kingdom of Northern Italy in 1805 and featured the tricolor flag to represent his power. Under Napoleon I and Pope Pius VII, the 15 states were converted into three regions.
No more than 10 years after, the unity ceased during the 1815 Conference at Vienna, when the nation was divided into nine states. There were external forces that always had an influence on the country, leading to people disagreeing on many things. In 1848, King Carlo Alberto led the National troops to finally give Italy its freedom and the tricolor banner was again raised as the national flag. King Alberto used his royal arms, particularly his black eagle shield, on the national banner. In 1860, King Vittorio Emmanuele I took over the country.
In 1870, the Prussians attacked France and Napoleon III finally left the country. King Emmanuele II took over Rome after Napoleon left and made it the country’s capital city.
