There are common flag patterns that one should be aware about, especially when engaged into racing. Racing flags serve a purpose more than just cues as to when to start and stop a race. They are even originally intended to signal drivers during races in place of radio link communication. Despite the improvement in the communication devices different racing circuits use, these flags are still classics. Here’s what you should know:

Checkered patterns on racing flags signal to the public that a winner has been declared. Of course the winning car is the one who first completed the race and reached the finish line first among everyone else. However, the waiving of these flags doesn’t stop immediately after the winner has crossed the finish line. It continues to be waived by the flagmen until the last racer or racers have successfully crossed the finish line.

Warning colors from race flags are also important to take notice of. The red flag signals that the race is to be concluded because of circumstances that make it dangerous for the racers to continue. The yellow flag signals racers to slow down because of some impending danger. On the other hand, the ones with red and yellow stripes on them signals slippery roads due to a spill of some sort that might endanger the racers.

There are other more technical signals that one should pick up from racing flags. Flag colors such as blue, black, etc have special meanings attached to them that only pros usually understand. If you decide to engage in racing either as a pastime or profession, be sure to take the necessary precautionary measures in knowing what color means what.
