When people visit castles, lodges, mansions and other aged homes, they might come across bizarre but attractive looking flags positioned on the walls, at the main entrance or in different general areas of the area. These are also displayed during annual events, huge clan meetings and other family affairs. The fabrics feature a variety of colors, mysterious images and even sayings and are always handled carefully and with utmost confidence. These are crest flags or family flags, which have been handed down through many decades or centuries to represent different families. These present many of the principles and values that families stand for and serve as historical pieces to be preserved for many years.

Crest flags are displayed with respect and pride because it showcases much of what the family who made it wish to show guests and relatives. A number of symbols can be used such as an eagle, a lion, a dove, a mountain, keys, etc. Each image will stand for certain attributes as well like supremacy, kindness, courage, reverence or valor. The use of certain colors can also stand for these same traits like red, yellow and black. Families can have various definitions for the available symbols and colors.

Aside from pictures and colors, the flags might also include words and short scripts. Many of these are written in ancient language, particularly Roman or Latin, for many families from Europe. The idea is to remind family members about their principles and objectives and to carry on the legacy of the clan for future generations to follow. The family slogan will tell a lot about their main thrust, such as excellency, financial wealth and stability, good fortune or helping others in need.

The family flag will showcase the virtues that have shaped the family through the years. Some crest flags have evolved through the years based on the experiences and achievements of key members of previous generations. These also serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for younger generations to uphold their clan and make it a proud part of the community.
