Countries have their fair share of pockets of dissent. This is largely due to the difference in opinion of the people. However, there are also times that these demonstrations go overboard. The resistance to a certain policy or a political stance might be strong enough to result to an open rebellion. This is when it becomes dangerous because it might take more than skirmishes to end the conflict.

The first and most important thing to remember is that these people are also part of the country. This means that if they have a reason to fight, they might turn out right after all. This should prompt an analysis of the policy or of the stance that they are against. If the policy made under their world flag is unfair for them, they might be justified in acting like that. However, if they do rebel because of their political perspective or because they simply don’t want the type of government, they might require taming.

Should a public demonstration degrade into a riot, you might need to take military non-lethal action. However, if it breeds violent insurgents, lethality might be the only option. The most important thing to remember about these insurgents is that they rally around a symbol that they can attribute to their cause. They usually have custom flags that represent what they want or what group they belong to. You will have to take away their symbol if you want to break their morale and therefore quell the rebellion.
