During the time of Ancient Romans, the initial flag version was placed on the spear and was used during a battle. The earliest type of
flagpole has been elaborated in many ways for flag display. Flags are being displayed on poles or a staff which can be either immobile or being carried for displays as well as parades. And on the sea, the flags are being put on the ship’s mast.
The stationary flagpoles are made out of wood or metal, with cord and pulley being affixed to it for the purposes of rising and lowering of the flags as required. Flags are also being created with grommets wherein there is a cord being affixed. The poles are with a ball on top or flat plate known as a truck, which was also created to hold on the wooden pole and make sure it wouldn’t split.
There are also objects used for decorating pole’s end part such as a star, eagle or a spear tip. And as recorded these days, the known tallest freestanding pole for flags is situated at Tajikistan named as Dushanbe, 165 meters in height. A flag pole that is too towering like this one, needs support and wires as well.
There are also portable
flag poles that can be utilized for displaying flags as well as banners. Most of the poles today are made out of aluminum or fiberglass; and they are also made customized to suit the requirement of the flag that will be on top of it.
