True to its name, Spanish message flags are banners that forward information and messages among individuals and groups. Centuries ago, there was no available technology that allows parties or organizations to communicate except through visual displays and auditory signals. Message flags are very useful since these help military groups identify whether approaching soldiers are enemies or allies based on the flag they’re carrying. The flags are also waved during battle to signify an attack, surrender or retreat.
Spanish message flags also serve as indicators of factions among different groups. For example, the Spanish army used to be composed of thousands of men, divided into several smaller groups. The flags are raised and waved to tell soldiers if they should move to a certain direction, hold their ground or follow a particular path. The commander only needs to order the banner holder to signal and the men will respond accordingly.
The flags easily identify one group from another and help organize teams. Today, Spanish message flags are more of a novelty and are displayed in traditional homes and offices. You will find different symbols on the flags especially the colors that indicate the order or message to be sent. Red usually indicates caution or danger. White stands for surrender or peace. Other symbols and emblems indicate who is leading a certain party. The King of Spain and other high officials have their own emblems which immediately tell other groups when they arrive, thus avoiding confusion and easily organizing troops. Many of these banners are carried by flag bearers with special accessories.
