Monday, September 22, 2014
The flag of Mexico, just like many others, are filled with symbols and has a rich background. The main colors are white, green and red with a coat-of-arms in the middle of the white stripe at the center. These colors were used by the nation after they gained independence from Spain in the 1821 War of Independence.
A lot of adjustments were made to the banner through the years although the coat-of-arms generally stayed the same. The emblem displays an eagle with a serpent in its claws, put on top of a cactus plant. The present coat-of-arms was laid out in 1968 by Helguera. According to ancient folklore, the Aztecs were looking for symbols from the heavens while they were traveling through Mexico. They were hoping that their gods would give them a sign where to build their main city. Huitzilopochtli, their god, was said to have spoken to them to keep searching until they see an eagle with a serpent on top of a cactus. The tribe traveled for 200 years until they finally saw the great bird on an island in Lake Texcoco. They finally built their capital city, Tenochtitlan.
The three colors on the flag are still available now although the meanings changed. The green stands for independence from the Spanish regime. The red stands for blood while the white represents purity or unity.

The Mexican flag is showcased in front of crowds where people raise their right arm and put their hand on their chest to show respect.
