In November 1816, Vice President William Rufus King resigned so that he can take a position in Russia. Once he came back, he became sick and transferred to Cuba to recover. In 1819, Rufus King moved to Alabama. This was the time when Alabama became a state in December 1819. King was also elected to represent the state of Alabama as a senator. He was re-elected three more times before garnering the position of Minister to France in 1844. In 1848, he was re-elected to the US Senate but resigned five years later to become Vice President under Franklin Pierce. On March 4, 1853, King took his oath of office but died just a little over a month later on April 18. There is a room in the State Capitol dedicated to King, featuring some of his personal things, furniture, jewelry and other collectibles. There were also documents showing his achievements and experiences.
The First White House of the Confederacy consisted of a makeshift executive mansion. It was donated by a local trader and quickly built to become the temporary abode of the newly elected President Jefferson Davis. Davis and his family lived in the mansion for three months before the capital of the Confederacy transferred to Richmond. The White House of the Confederacy is situated just across the State Capitol. Today, there are guided tours so visitors can see the personal belongings of the Davis family. There are also photos, writings and other interesting items from the Civil War to find.
