Many people are quite familiar with the usual colors and images displayed on pennants especially those that are used in fraternities. The initial members of fraternities incorporated special symbols and terms on the pennant streamer that will stand for their traits and virtues. These are passed on to new members which is why applicants have to be thoroughly informed of the meanings.

The pennants used in schools and universities also hold a lot of meaning and use different symbols and terms. Sometimes, these will only feature the initials of the school together with the logo. There are also more intricate designs that include several images or ancient art and words. Many fraternities in colleges will use three symbols in Greek or Latin to stand for their group. Many members will also feature the same symbols on their shirts, hats and other items to show their support to the fraternity.

Ships and sailing vessels also make use of pennants for many helpful reasons. The set up is usually done in a manner that will guarantee the protection and stability of the flag. The ship will also feature the pennants even while it is docked. Other countries and vessels can tell where the vessel came from and what its objectives are just by looking at the pennant.

The most famous pennant streamer of them all features the skull and crossbones. As soon as people see the banner with the black canton, they always associate it with death or crime because the pennant is used by pirates and buccaneers in the past.
