Wednesday, July 3, 2013
An ensign or world flag in national colors is often in rectangular shape. The ratio is frequently in 3:5 or 1:2 of the width and length. The flag must be positioned in the pole that is not near the stem. It must not interfere on the regular operations of the ship like the boom above the stem. In cases like this the flag should be placed from a backstay.
The world flag is coasted from 8am in the morning until the setting of the sun in the evening. If the ship will be left and crew will not come back before sun set then it is recommended that the ensign will be taken down. As per tradition, ensigns should not be flown in the night.
In the western part of the world ensigns such as the Old Glory featuring the fifty stars is often displayed. The United States yacht flag is also displayed which features a fouled anchor on top of a circle with the US thirteen stars. The Union Jack is showcased in the United Kingdom which features the three red and white crosses with the blue canton. It is often used for war ships. Recreational boaters showcase the Red ensign as the symbol or their maritime practices.

The flag of Canada which shows the red bands with a a Maple leaf in the middle of a white background is often showcased in Canada as it is their national flag. Canadian ships and boats chose the Canada ensign and proudly showcase it in their vessels.
