All of us have most probably seen a world flag, and most likely we recognize at least five or even more. We all know what flags are – pieces of woven cloth that are hoisted above flagpoles and carry high valued symbolism to the bearer.

World flags are probably the most common of all types of flags we have today. Each country has their national flag, with a unique design that symbolizes the nature of their sovereign. These pieces of cloth often bear the historical value of their independence, or perhaps the coat of arms of which they have fought for to gain freedom. In other words, the design of each world flag has its own influence of freedom and liberty to its citizens. As a general rule, the national flags recognized by the international community numbers the same as that of the number of countries that exist, plus a few exemptions of additional protectorates and independent states under a bigger sovereign, but independent nonetheless.

While we are sure that each world flag have had originated from the very country that brought independence it the land, there are speculations as to where the true first flag was used in history. Some say that it started in China, while others have attributed the present day flag as a variation of the Roman Empire era’s use of the vexillum, while others have claimed that it started in the Mahabharata. Nevertheless, these present day flags have commonly originated from the 18th century during war and battles. These battles eventually led to the independence and freedom of a nation, hence the concept of nationalistic pride for the world flags.
