The flag of Mexico, just like many of the country flags, is filled with symbolic history. The flag has three colors which are green, white and red with the image of the country’s coat-of-arms at the middle of a white stripe. The design was adapted by the country following its independence from the ruling of Spain in 1821 during the War of Independence.
There were many times that the Mexican flag was revised but one thing that is consistent is that the coat-of-arms is always present featuring a serpent held by an eagle on top of a cactus. This coat-of-arms was designed by Helguera n 1968. The design was inspired from an Aztec legend, a group of nomads that wandered in Mexico, who was said to have waited for signs from the gods to instruct them to build a city. Their god instructed them to keep on searching until they discovered a place where they saw a majestic eagle eating a snake while on top of a cactus that grew out of a stone that was submerged in a lake. After roaming on the lands for two centuries they saw the mythical eagle on the island of Lake Texcoco. This is where they built Tenochtitlan, their capital, the same place where the main plaza in Mexico is at.
The colors of the Mexican flag remains the same throughout the years but the meaning of the colors have evolved. Green represents freedom and independence from Spain, it also signifies hope. White represents the Catholic faith, it also signifies unity. Red represents he blood of heroes, it can also signify religion.
