The citizens of Haiti are called Haitians, known for their creativity and artistic skills. Artworks from Haiti are famous around the world because of their attractive features and bright colors. Music is an essential part of Haitian culture and is inspired by American, French and Spanish tunes. The drum is one of the most common musical instruments used in the country. The Kompa Direk or Haitian Compas is a famous type of music in Haiti. Compas comes from the Spanish term which means tones or rhythm. Haiti did not record music until 1937. Guignard is a jazz musician from Haiti who first recorded the unique tunes in 1937. The music in Haiti also gives reference to Vodou traditions and events. The beats tend to go from medium to fast and are backed by saxophones, electric guitars, a horn and synthesizers.

Some of the renowned music kinds include Mizik Rasin, Rara, Zouk, Mini-Jazz and Haitian Rap. The celebrations start in February. There are carnivals or Kanaval held during that time when people spend time away from their usual activities to be on the streets, performing dances and singing. During the event, parade floats are also displayed together with music playing in the background. Rara is a musical celebration held before Easter. Many Haitians are actually Christians, specifically Roman Catholics. Vodou is an ancient religion that still has followers until the present day. The religion follows a lot of customs inspired by Western Africa, Central Africa, Taino and Europe. You can witness some solemn religious activities in many regions.
