People have come across a flag at least once during their lifetime. In fact, there are so many flags everywhere that it is almost impossible to miss it especially if the material features attractive colors and designs. In commercial areas, a big flag or street banner is very common because it garners attention and helps spread information quickly. These can also indicate a special celebration or holiday in certain states. Flags are very useful in spreading messages and information to others regardless of where you are in the world.
The first custom flags and banners were made to guide military troops on the battlefield. These were very important in letting soldiers know where their allies and enemies were. Over the years, the use of flags have also widened and these have become applicable in different industries, countries and institutions. Flags are still used to signal troops today and to provide information about a vessel’s current location and country of origin. Before the 18th century, flags were usually placed on boats and used by troops. Today, these are seen in front of homes, schools and offices.
The oldest world flag is the Dannebrog of Denmark. The banner was first raised in the 13th century but it is still existent today.

The Nepalese flag is the only national flag that does not have a rectangular form. It features two triangles placed together. There are other flags that also do not come in rectangular shapes, such as the state flag of Ohio and the city flag of Tampa, Florida. Marketers may also use non-rectangular flags to quickly grab attention. Examples are feather flags and teardrop flags.
The biggest flag in the world is the Brazilian state flag. It measures 8,740 square feet and was first raised in the 1960s. There are also many big flags featured by businesses everywhere, measuring about 17 square feet. These are generally placed on top of tall and large flagpoles.
When viewing traditional or heraldic flags, there are certain elements that will present the background and story of the people and place that made these. Some of these flags date back several centuries and have been used by the oldest families and nobles in the world. Many of these feature animals, bright colors and unique patterns. Each symbolize a certain principle or story.
A vexillographer is a person who studies flags.
Some nations like the United States came up with their own Flag Code which tells people how to properly handle and take care of a flag. There are rules to follow with some states imposing penalties to violators. There are customized flags that have to be treated with respect at all times. National flags have to be disposed of properly. These should not be shown in a tattered state.
Betsy Ross is famous for being the person who made the first flag of America. The red, white and blue tones are still present until today. Through the years, the white stars have grown in number as more states were added.

Custom flags have proven to be quite useful through the years. The use of flags is no longer limited to the battlefield.
