When people watch car races on TV, they will notice a number of attractive cars moving in the same direction along a round track with the intent to past the finish line first. Aside from aiming to overtake other cars and move as quickly as possible while maintaining control of the vehicle, drivers have to follow certain guidelines throughout the race to maintain their safety as well as the safety of other drivers.

Because drivers have to focus on the car to accelerate smartly without losing control, it will be difficult for them to get information from external sources. They have to concentrate deeply because they are moving at relatively fast speeds. Car flags or contest flags for races serve the special function of directing race drivers so that they can focus on the race while still understanding the provided guidelines.

Many race flags appear as a short rectangle positioned in a horizontal manner. Using the simple figure will allow race car drivers to quickly understand the guideline. Using other shapes will prove to be less effective because these are harder to display and does not move similarly to a rectangular horizontal flag.

Race car flags also feature bright contrasting colors so that these stand out and are easily recognized by the drivers. Some flags feature solid single colors to indicate different guidelines and elements of the race. Green represents the starting line, yellow, white or blue signals the driver to be careful and red signals the driver to stop. A black flag usually means that the driver should quit the race or that the driver has been disqualified.

The most popular car flag design is probably the black and white checkered flag found at the end of the race. This is presented to let drivers know where the finish line is and marks the official end of the race. It is at times presented to the winner of the competition. The flag can also be designed to honor the winner by having his name, logo and symbol printed on the fabric. The winner of the race is highly celebrated for being the fastest.
