Custom Street Pole Banners - Custom Feather Flags

Monday, December 10, 2012

Having a custom flags collection is one of the fastest growing hobbies today. Although the practice is not very common compared to collecting cards, stamps or coins, it still offers the same thrills.

The term used for the study of flags is vexillology. When the internet was non-existent, collecting flags used to be very challenging because the sources were very limited. Unlike coin or stamp collecting where you can find the needed materials almost anywhere, collecting flags posed a lot of difficulty because it was hard to get in touch with foreign manufacturers and sources. Stamps and coins are constantly in circulation so these are easier to gather. Flags stand for your country so these hold a lot more meaning than regular items. In the past, people do not simply let go of the banners except for very good reasons. Now, you can easily buy flags off the internet.

Flags are available in various sizes and designs. There is also a relative term for each one. Below are some of the common words and terms.

The pole holding the flag up is known as the flagstaff or flagpole. People use these words interchangeably. The edge of the flag is known as the hoist which is found just right next to the flagpole. It describes the vertical width of the banner. The side or opposite edge of the hoist is called the fly. It is also used to describe the length of the flag in a horizontal manner. The background on the custom flag is called the field.
