World flags were constantly used in different parts of the globe in the past centuries as a means of directing and identifying territories and troops. The British were colonizing different parts of the world so there were always new territorial governors being sent in countries like New Zealand, Australia, India and the Caribbean Islands. Each of these places also featured the flag of the British before until the British Commonwealth finally broke loose from the bonds of the imperial rule. Today, the flags of Canada and others feature completely different elements. There are still some countries that still feature some parts of the old flag, such as Australia and New Zealand.

These flags were always used in the battlefield to properly guide soldiers and let the enemy know that troops are coming to fight. These may not be as common as government flags but still get the job done of identifying allies from enemies. Military flags always boost the morale of fighting soldiers and invite unity among the troops.

The flags will also properly identify agencies and groups with the same purpose. There are various agencies in the US government so flags were also made to represent each such as the flag of the Justice Department, Department of Agriculture and Labor Department.

After America was attacked on September 11, 2001, more American flags were flown to foster patriotism. The Star Spangled Banner was always visible in many places to remind people that they should stay strong and stick together especially during moments of crisis.
