The world flag is also called an ensign. It comes in varying national shades but is often in the shape of a rectangle. The ratio of the width and length is mostly   3:5 or 1:2. Ideally a flag should be positioned away from the stem. This is done to avoid obstructing the normal operations of the vessel as normally the boom spans the upper portion of the stem. In this case the flag must be located on a back stay.
It is ideal that the world flag is flown from 8 am in the morning until sunset. In cases where the ship will be left for a while and the crew will not be back before sunset then it is recommended that the ensign be taken down. Based on custom the ensign should not be flown during the night.
