Flags on boats are place are not merely for decorations but it is placed there for a reason. There is actually an etiquette about these flags which is based on old customs of naval and merchant vessels from all around the world. Flag etiquette seems to be complex and unexpected by recreational boat enthusiast. Custom boat flags however are very essential whether you are on high seas or docked on land. Once you get to practice and get involved with its usage you will learn to value and appreciate its importance.

The basic system and custom of recreational boating is quite baffling to most people. The boaters should clearly understand and be guided on these matters. The maritime flags have different figures and appearance. The placement of these flags has basic protocols to follow most specially for recreational boats. It is very important to ensure that these basic protocols are being understood and followed. Once the basics are mastered the boaters can then get into the complicated details.

The stem part of the boat is where the flag is often located. In the Roman times it is customary to place holy items and puppies on the deck. The deck that makes the roof placed near the stem is sometimes referred to as the “poop deck”. People are impressed with the stem as they think it is an important part of the boat reserved for persons with authority such as the captain. It might be because the captains have their accommodation in this area. The world flag is also placed there which is very visible to everybody.
