Owning an American flag requires delicate care because this is a significant item that involves pride of America. Below are easy guides on how to care for your American flag:
Hand wash is best.
The benefit of hand wash is that you can control the intensity of rubbing the fabric. However, if you are not comfortable in manual cleaning there are laundry shops that offers machines for delicate fabrics.
Keep it from obstacles.
In order to prevent your flag from cuts, dirt, rips and tears make sure to keep it from obstacles such as wires, tree branches, roofs, cables and etc.
Attention to signs of wear and tear.
When you notice a tear, no matter how small it is, you must repair it before it can expand. Small tear can lead to bigger damage and be ripped apart in time when left unattended.
An American flag needs “tender loving care” however if you think its damage is beyond repair it is best to let it retire from its duty. According to the US flag code when a flag is no longer in good condition to represent the country, burning it in private is a dignified way of disposing it. An official ceremony is not needed to do this. Just a mere non-public disposal will do.
In taking care of an American flag, you must remember that even if it is a sign of strength and power it is only made of cloth. Handle it with utmost care and it can last longer.
