Upon Mississippi state flag is one of the more iconic state flags in US history. Upon the state’s secession from the union on the 9th of January in 1861, the United States of America did not yet exist, nor did the Confederate US. Therefore, it became a sovereign state like its other southern neighbors.
After its secession, the citizens of old Mississippi of its six coastal towns or “countries” changed back to the flag design used during the short-reigned republic of Florida of 1810. During that time, the Mississippi state flag was a simple depiction of a single white star in the middle of a sea of plain blue color. Referred to as the “Bonnie Blue Flag”, it also became the reference to a popular marching song.
The other variant of the Mississippi state flag a depiction of a Magnolia tree on a field of white. Some variants add a small red fringe or bar for added effect. Known as the Magnolia Flag, this was to be the official state flag of the state of Mississippi for over three decades during the Confederation.
For the stars and stripes issue concerning the Mississippi state flag, the current state flag has been a drastic change from the former in which it may be mistaken as the confederate’s flag. similarity with the strips and bar design on the flag of the state was rather confusing as the national flag especially when viewed from a distance.

Also a permanent change of length and specifications was applied to the Mississippi state flag, especially with the length wherein it was shortened to its current dimensions according to the guidelines and provisions of the Flag Act of 1863. This had to be done since the former dimensions of the state flag were similar to that of a flag for surrender, and so it had to be modified.
