There are several major religions in the world. Each of these institutions of faith has their own specific set of symbols and meanings they revere as holy and sacred. These symbols may be depicted in artworks, murals, dramas, plays, and even faith flags among others. These symbols have dated back as early as man started to worship and spread the faith among other people. Since symbols are a good way to explain and add definition to communicated ideas, they have been in use for the propagation of faith, more than just mere representation.
Christianity, the largest religious group as of date (with several different sects classified under it), have three mainstay symbols that are revered to as very meaningful and spiritual. The Ichthys or the fish, the Christian cross, and the Patriarchal cross. The fish is a symbol which denotes the son of God, saved by Jesus. In this manner judgment will come and those who are found good will go to Heaven and those otherwise shall be condemned to Hell. One may actually try to think that it is similar to fishermen trying to segregate the good fish with the bad fish as a catch.
The cross is also one of the most common and well acknowledged symbols in the Christian community, serving as a staunch reminder of the structure to which Jesus has died to save us from our sins. It is seen everywhere, on simple paintings, even personal actions, as well as prints in faith flags. The crucifix, a blank state of the cross is used commonly by the devout as a symbol of the risen savior.

While the fish and the cross are both symbols which pertains to the risen Christ, the former was used in the earlier times. As time progressed, the cross held more of a distinguishable testament to the actual rising of the savior, hence its popularity with the modern Christian movement of today.
