When you view the national flag of the United States of America, you should be reminded of unity, independence and strength. There are many names that the flag is known for such as “Old Glory” or “The Star Spangled Banner”. For many people in the United States, the national flag has become a source of strength for over two hundred years, especially during times of trial.
Currently, there are 13 horizontal stripes on the flag. Seven red stripes and six white stripes are positioned alternately on the flag. The stripes stand for the 13 colonies while the 50 states are represented by the white stars against the blue field. The red colorstands for valor, the blue stands for justice and perseverance and thewhite stands for innocence and purity.

All 50 states have their own state flags. You will realize that a state flag exists for Washington, D.C. and other areas linked to the United States. There are several other flags that you will come across with especially when dealing with government agencies and international groups.

The U.S. flag should be accorded great respect at all times. When flown with other local flags, it should be higher than the rest.No one should display the American flag torn or tattered. It should not be lowered than any man or object. It should not come in contact with the ground. Other flags should be lower to show respect.

The stripes and stars on the flag have been adjusted through the years. Regardless of how much the U.S. flag has changed, Americans everywhere still show it full reverence.
