The flag of Morocco which you see today actually started in 1956. The first one was flown in 1666. The banner has a bright red field and black border. A green star is also present on the flag which has a ratio of 2:3 to the whole banner. You will discover that there are actually two types of the flag you find at present. The first one features a civil symbol on the upper left part. The second type includes civil symbols on all four corners of the flag. The civil symbol appears in yellow and looks like a crown with a single star over it.
Through the years, the flag of Morocco signifies the royal generations that stem back to the Prophet Muhammad. The people today are all related to Ali’s wife, Fatima. Red is the dominant color because it has special meanings for the Sharifs of Mecca as well as the Imams or holy priests of Yemen. The flag in 1666 was all red and has no stars. It used to represent the pioneers of Morocco.

In 1915, some changes were made particularly on the banner. When Mulay Yusuf was leader of the nation, he chose the Seal of Solomon to be part of the flag. The seal has the green tone and was attractive. It also featured a star or pentangle, which originally had six points. It was more popularly known as the Star of David. During the first World War, the flag went through big changes and the star was changed from six to five stars, which is the current pentangle.
