It is a usual sight in libraries, hotels, government offices and schools to see world flags being hanged on the walls. Another place where different world flags are often displayed is at dojos, a room where martial arts are practiced. The flag of America is one of the common world flags that are usually displayed along with flags of Japan and China.
Why would a training center such as dojo would display different country flags on their wall? The answer is simple. Just like a government office would hang world flags, it is because it is a way of a dojo to show honor and respect to the country where a specific martial arts originated.
Respect. It is the fundamental value that must be learned in martial arts alongside with discipline. In line with respect to self and others, it is proper to show respect to the origins of martial arts and this is shown by hanging the flags of the martial arts countries on the wall. This way, it will instil in the minds of the students. Remembering the history of the originating countries of martial arts and how it developed and evolved will make the students respect the craft more.

An example of this is the flag of Japan. Martial arts developed greatly from the different techniques during the time of samurai, at a time when Japanese who were not warriors were not allowed to use any weapons but they need to defend themselves and their homes. Rich martial arts stories like these deserved to be remembered and hanged on the walls.
