When you enter a dojo, you will find a variety of world flags hanging on the walls. You may wonder why there are so many of these presented. Many people do not bother to ask but these do look attractive and inviting. One of the main reasons is that martial arts is founded and developed in various countries around the world. Many training schools will then showcase the nations that developed their specific form of martial arts, to show respect to the old masters as well as pass on tradition.
It is important to show respect to the pioneers of the martial art. Students will also learn more about the history and background of their preferred form of self-defense by identifying the different world flags hanging on the walls. The world flag on the wall may include the flag of Japan, Korea, Brazil and the United States among others. Many forms of martial arts took decades to develop and have been influenced by one or more countries.

If you take time to study the martial arts of Japan, you will discover that many of the approaches were actually developed during the era of the Samurai. During that period, many citizens were prohibited from carrying weapons although they needed to keep themselves using other means. They started to improvise with farm tools to protect their families. Fighting techniques by hand were later developed to prevent robbers and other attackers in the home. The close combat approach gave them an advantage in the next several decades.
