When you watch the parades and festivities of the Brazilian Carnaval, you will notice a special part called the Porta-bandeira, which means flag bearer. There are plenty of things to discover about the Brazilian Carnaval, making you appreciate each element more because of the representations and symbols behind each. Some people spent their lives trying to make the festivities as memorable as possible in Brazil.
The Porta-Bandeira features a lot of special elements and traits, which actually shows the banners of samba schools around the country to both the audience and the samba judging panel. A samba school banner is a flag that is usually present during parades, big national events and even local activities. The traditional samba school of Mangueira features pink and green hues on its flag. The words Primeira de Mangueira are printed on the banner.
In every carnaval competition in Brazil, the samba schools should appoint at least one person to carry the flag throughout the parades and activities which happen every February or March. The special person will be the flag bearer. In some cases, a woman is assigned for the task. The Porta-bandeira has the task of waving, displaying and swirling the samba school banner in a beautiful and distinct way. The flag bearer may also be accompanied by escorts.
The element of the Porta-bandeira is very special in parades. The person has to practice several months in advance for a great presentation. All people will watch her as she performs her part and features the flag in the best manner possible.
