A lot of people are not actually familiar with the background of the United States flag. People actually referred to the banner as Old Glory in the olden days. The name was provided by William Drive, a sea captain who lived in America. The term was also used specifically for the flag owned by William Driver, which has become one of the most prized artifacts in the United States.
The Old Glory was originally made by William Driver’s mother and a number of women from Massachusetts. Driver’s mother passed the flag to him during the 1820s. It was a sizable flag measuring about 10 x 17 square feet. It was also created from heavy metal to lift the fluttering while being raised over the mast of the ship.
Following the usual design during that time, there were 24 stars, which represented the nautical layout. There was also a small anchor placed at one corner of the blue region of the banner.
William Driver was glad to be the recipient of the gift and maintained the flag in his care. The Old Glory was the name given personally by William to the flag, as he departed the harbor to go around the world as commander of the ship Charles Doggett in 1831. All these were presented by historical evidences.

During the whole trip, the Old Glory was the main flag of the ship that Driver sailed in. The weather also had deteriorating effects on the flag so there were actually many hints that the flag was patched at various points.
