Custom Street Pole Banners - Custom Feather Flags

Wednesday, July 22, 2015
Any type of custom flag, regardless of the size, source and materials used, will deteriorate over time. People will generally notice that their flag will fade and tear at different points in time.
The U.S. government generally wants a flag to last at least 90 days when used every day from sunrise to sundown. These may be taken down during harsh weather conditions. Flags that are displayed 24 hours a day will have a shorter lifespan compared to those that are taken down at night.

There are plenty of factors that will limit the lifespan of the flag such as sunlight, wind, rain and other external conditions like dirt and smoke. Taking down the flag during bad weather will help prolong its life.
There are actually several methods that will help enhance the life of a custom flag:
1. Bring the flag down during inclement weather. Wind can get very strong during storms. The winds can rip and tear the flag as the fabric expands and contracts while fighting the storm. Rain will also wet the flag, causing the fabric to expand because of the weight of the water. If the flag gets wet, it is best to take it down and dry it thoroughly to prevent it from expanding. If the flag is left on the pole to dry, the material will stretch because of the extra weight.
2. Clean the flag periodically. The flag should be cleaned to take out contaminants, dirt and other specks that may damage the fabric. The best way to clean the banner is to wash it with warm water and mild detergent first. Handwash the flag because leaving it in wash water can damage the fabric. The color may also run on the white portion. You can also take the American flag to the local dry cleaners to have them take care of it without causing any damage.
3. The fly end should be free from obstruction. To prevent rips and tears, the fly of the flag should be free and steer clear of obstructions like tree branches, wires and roofs.
4. Check for signs of wear and tear. The flag’s life can be prolonged by giving it the care and protection it deserves. Check for minor signs of damage then repair these immediately before bigger holes and damage develop.
The flag is a sign of nationalism and love of country which is why people are encouraged to give it adequate concern at all times. Some materials will last longer against the outdoor conditions but over time, will also get damaged. If you regularly bring down the flag at night and clean it, you will find that it can last longer than others.

The United States Flag should also be retired if it is already severely damaged. Do not attempt to repair the flag and raise it up again in a tattered state. The Flag Code of America provides that the flag should be destroyed in a dignified manner if it can no longer be featured in the best manner. There is no official ceremony to retire the flag but people should get rid of it in a respectable way. Local some organizations like the Boy Scouts of America or Veterans of Foreign War to help you on how to dispose of the flag properly.
