Currently, people will instantly recognize the Chinese national flag when they see it. The banner has a solid medium red background. There are five gold stars on the upper left part of the banner. One star is bigger than the rest and is found on the far side of the flag. The four other stars have equal sizes and form a semi-circle around the large star. The Chinese flag symbolize a lot about the country’s past and virtues.
The Chinese flag also has several meanings. The giant gold star represents the leadership of the communist party in the country. The four small stars represent the four main classes in the country – the peasants, the workers, the bourgeoisie and the capitalists. The stars are gold to symbolize the skin color of Chinese citizens. The red main color stands for the communist party.

The current Chinese flag started all the way back in 1949, just after the civil war stopped. In July 1949, a competition was initiated by the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. They invited citizens from all areas to show their own concept and to give ideas on the new Chinese flag design. The contest was also a way to restore peace and unite the people. The contest ultimately garnered over 3,000 entries. Zen Liansong, an economist, was credited for coming up with the final design that became the official Chinese banner. The Chinese government approved his design in September 1949. However, the original concept by Liansong, which included a hammer and sickle, was adjusted, so only the five stars and red background remained.
