On December 13, Christmas season in Sweden officially kicks off with Saint Lucia Day. Based on the country’s background, Saint Lucia was a symbol of perseverance. December 13 is actually the longest night in the country, so the people pay tribute Saint Lucia to remind themselves how to get through the darkest times of their lives by lighting thousands of candles. In houses, the oldest female in the family will wear a white robe as well as put a wreath on her head. She will then offer coffee to the entire family, together with mulled wine or Glogg and buns. Outside the house, there are plenty of Saint Lucia aides who also wear the same white robe and hand food and drinks to people. A Glogg party is also held in other areas.
One tradition that dates back several decades involves putting a Christmas goat, called a Julbock, beneath a Christmas tree. Before, the straw goats were created using the rest of harvest shafts. These stood for vitality and fertility. At present, these can be acquired in various parts of Sweden and is a favorite custom. These are also used as decors for the Christmas tree.
Families generally bring home Christmas trees a few days before the eve of Christmas and add small Swedish flags, straw decorations, lights and candies. There are also wreaths, blinking stars and other ornaments at doorways and windows.

Many people look forward to Christmas Eve dinner, which features a variety of treats and food like sausages, ribs, ham, cheese and porridge.
