The American flag just like other world flags is a very symbolic item of America because it encapsulates the totality of the country. It is a significant symbolism because it can tell the history of the country and what values or beliefs it holds. Every detail about the flag plays a vital role from its dimensions, design and colors. But do you know that even how the flag is fold has a specific standard to follow? The flag of America or also known as “Old Glory” must be folded thirteen times. The thirteen folds represent the first 13 American colonies. This started as a military practice since 1955 during their rituals. However this fact is not very much taught to schools nowadays.
Each fold of the flag has meanings and these are as follows:
First fold: This fold of stars and stripes signifies the symbol of life.
Second fold: Symbol of the American belied in eternal life.
Third fold: This is to honor and remember the war veterans who sacrificed their lives in order to defend and protect the country and to achieve a bigger picture which is to spread peace to the whole world.
Fourth fold: This represents the citizens’ faith in God. This is to trust God, the heavenly Father, where many American prays to in times of trouble and in happiness as well.
Fifth fold: This represents a tribute to the country. This part is associated with the words uttered by the Patriot Decatur that says that the country may always be right when dealing with other countries and that no matter what right or wrong, America is still our own country.
Sixth fold: This symbolizes the heart. The heart of the citizens offers their allegiance to the United States of America for what it stands, as one nation, with freedom and justice for all.
Seventh fold: Represents honor to the Armed Forces. This is a highly respectable group because they are the protectors of the country from the hands of all kinds of enemies whether domestic or foreign, and whether within or beyond the boundaries of US.
Eight fold: This represents a tribute to all mothers.
Ninth fold: This fold symbolizes womanhood. America pays tribute to women of faith, loyalty, love, and shows devotion to the country. All these characters are what the citizens are molded to be.
Tenth fold: This represents an honor to all fathers. This is for the belief that fathers too have sacrificed his children since they were born in order to defend the country.
Eleventh fold: This fold signifies the commitment made by King David and King Solomon to glorify the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the rest of Hebrews.
Twelfth fold: This represents the symbol of eternal life with the Heavenly Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Thirteenth fold: This is the final fold of the American flag with the stars on the top of the fold to remind every citizens of the motto of the nation. “In God We Trust”.
