When observing a carnaval parade in Brazil, people will generally notice the flag bearer because of the way the person dresses. The flag bearer usually wears bright and colorful tones that will attract attention everywhere. When making the carnaval costume, directors usually spend a lot of time and money to ensure that it is fully detailed and representative of the organization or school that the bearer represents. The directors and school wish to showcase their talents and skills based on the appearance of the dress. The costume will only be showcased once a year so promoters have to invest heavily so as not to be embarrassed in front of the whole country. Big samba schools will spend thousands to come up with the best garb.

When watching a Porta-bandeira perform in Brazil, people will also notice that there is a special way of presenting the banner. The samba dance is not the way to present the banner. Instead, the flag bearer does a smooth dance that appears much like ballet during the parade. Samba dance masters describe the dance as spinning around in a distinct but graceful pattern. These are also done with beautiful gestures. The flag bearer will get points based on how she dances. It is important that the bearer maintains grace and a positive attitude throughout the parade because these will be noticed by the judging panel. The flag bearer is required to bring the banner until the end of the parade and festivities. Usually, the parade will stop at Rio de Janeiro. At times, the Porta-bandeira will kiss the flag to show respect and honor to it. In Brazil, these traditions are passed on every year. The Mestre-Sala is also an important element of the celebrations.
