There are so many flags and banners available today that people can often get confused on the right one to use for a specific event. Different establishments make use of these flags with very good results, such as colleges, offices, businesses and government agencies. Especially in commercial places, you will notice a large street banner or flag set up in front of stores, windows and other high places to garner attention immediately. These generally share information about the business or institution and may feature attractive colors for people to see from a distance.
The first custom flags and banners were made to aid military troops in rallying and acquiring information about the battlefield status. Messages can be sent through flags from one group of soldiers to the next. The practice has been done in the past several centuries. Before, flags were only used by naval and military troops. However, in the years that followed, these became decorative pieces as well and became more common in workplaces and homes.

The Dannebrog of Denmark is known as the oldest world flag design that is still used consistently at present. The flag dates back to the 13th century.
Nepal is the only nation that features a non-rectangular flag. The Nepalese flag features a couple of triangles stacked on top of each other. Some commercial flags also do not take on a rectangular shape to appear more unique to potential customers. Examples are teardrop and feather flags.
The Brazilian state flag is the biggest flag on Earth. It has been waved and raised by the people since the 1960s. It measures 8740 square feet.
Several traditional flags and heraldic flags feature unique symbols, colors and elements that represent the past or virtues of a certain family, nation or government. For businessmen, bright-colored flags will gain attention quickly, thereby ushering more customers to their shops. For countries, the colors can mean different things. For example, red can symbolize war or blood while yellow can mean gold or wealth.
A person who studies flags is known as a vexillographer.
In the United States, a federal flag is always treated with respect and there are rules and guidelines on how to raise, handle and get rid of the flag. If the flag has deteriorated and needs to be retired, these are destroyed and kept in a respectful manner. Customized flags may also be treated in the same manner. The lifespan of flags will depend on the material used primarily.
Betsy Ross is known for being the person who sewed the first flag of the United States. The red, white and blue colors were still present on the first flag and have been used in subsequent versions. The stars have grown in number through the years as more states were added.
Flags through the centuries have grown in terms of use. Although these only used to be present on the battlefield, custom flags today have a variety of new uses such as sending messages to people in a business perspective, and sharing the virtue of patriotism among citizens.
