Throughout the history of the world, flags always had a special purpose. The first type of banner was called a vexilloid. Before there were a lot of wooden or metal poles that featured carvings and symbols at the top. About 2,000 years before, various fabrics were also placed on top of vexilloids to improve the overall appearance. These became known as the first standard flags. Some custom flag uses have also changed as the years passed. There are flags used by families, groups and institutions and these have stayed unchanged for centuries. Flags today are still very much in use as these were before. Flags are very good for communication and representation purposes.
During the medieval times, flags were very useful for armies. Knights wore armor and were hard to see from afar so soldiers used flags to identify their enemies and friends. The flags were also used to rally the troops and indicate their current positions and actions. A white flag has become the symbol of giving up for many years. Usually, soldiers who wave a white flag will no longer be attacked. A white flag is usually made from any white material because soldiers do not usually carry these into war.
At present, there are also various flags that have gained recognition. Black pirate flags with the skull and crossbones have always been linked to pirates. These strike fear among maritime vessels even today. World flags are featured by all countries especially during their respective Flag Days and other national holidays.
